Damn, read about that yesterday. I occasionally listened to Coast and Coast back in the early 2000s, and man that guy had a knack for spinning a yarn/keeping listeners engaged. The story about the pilot that called in as he was flying into Area 51 was fantastic.

Statement from R. Lee Ermey's long time manager, Bill Rogin:

It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed.

Ermey was a strongly pro-gun guy who served as an NRA board member and was a longtime spokesman for Glock. In those roles, he had a lot of contact with members of the "gun media," and I've read a fair number of articles on Mr. Ermey and also read some interviews. I've never seen anyone write a bad word about him, and he came across as entertaining, funny, and a genuinely good human being. RIP.

Yeah, he's one of those guys whose iconic role/performance really betrayed his real life character. Loved seeing him pop up in stuff where he portrayed a character opposite of Hartman.

Reading a little more about him, I never realized he was in an Aviation Support MOS before becoming a Drill Instructor. He served 11 years, 9 of which were in Aviation Support. Like my Dad, step-dad, and uncles. *fistbump*

It also means that my MOS was a tiny step closer to the battlefield than his, as I was I worked in Air Support Operations.

His career ended because he got hurt in Okinawa. Typical staff sergeant. ;)

It's worth Googling how Ermy got the Full Metal Jacket gig. Just know he was not hired to act in the movie, but rather to be a technical consultant and adviser to the original actor who was cast to play Gunny Hartman.

The guy originally hired to play Gunnery Sergeant Hartman was repurposed as the helicopter door gunner, who had a few great lines of his own.

FMJ was fairly disappointing by Kubrick standards. Still pretty good.

The boot camp part of the movie is insanely good stuff.

"If God would have wanted you up there he would have miracled your ass up there by now, wouldn't he?"

I mean, come on.

The war part of the movie is kind of........ dull? The movie just loses most of its mojo once they get to Hue.
