“The authorities have determined that Bob passed from head trauma,” the Saget family said. “They have concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep. No drugs or alcohol were involved.”

god damn. I know it’s not recommended to let someone fall asleep after a concussion. Is this the same sort of deal? what, physiologically, is the issue with that?
RIP
Was just going to come over here and post that about Saget. Damn that sucks. People are always hitting their heads and not thinking anything about it. 9999999/10000000 you will be fine. But that sucks.
PS - this is how my grandma died. Fell, hit back of her head. Thought nothing of it. Neighbor found her passed out, 2 days later she was gone. Now she was 91, but still. She was in "perfect" health for a 91 year old. Sucks that is what took her out.

I remember in high school health class (??) they taught us to always seek medical help if we injured our head in any way. Think they were mostly talking about car accidents and whiplash, but even to this day it's hard to comprehend how a little head injury could lead to death. Head injuries are no joke.

I looked it up and it seems like it's a different case. Saget died from a subdural hematoma. Apparently sleeping after a concussion isn't that massive of a deal; it just might hide certain symptomsgod damn. I know it’s not recommended to let someone fall asleep after a concussion. Right. You hear the stories about people getting hit by baseballs or pucks and they have to be observed for hours afterwards.
The subdural bleeding can take time to create symptoms, slurred speech, muscle control, etc. So I assume that if Saget had hit his head a couple hours earlier, he would have been awake to notice the symptoms and try to get help. Being alone and having it happen right before heading to bed, meant that he wasn't conscious for the warning signs.

Depending on the severity of the concussion, they are also going to keep the patient awake for 24 hours or so because they can't really take useful skull x-rays until the soft tissue swelling quiets down. (That's an older protocol, it might not be done anymore)
All told though, I think most of us would be happy to check out after a full life, quietly in our sleep, and in no pain.

Didn't realize he was 65. Huh.

This reminds me of the joke. “We should all be as lucky to go like grandpa. Peacefully in our sleep. Unlike his passengers, screaming and crying.”All told though, I think most of us would be happy to check out after a full life, quietly in our sleep, and in no pain.

Ian McDonald, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter best known for his co-founding roles in both King Crimson and Foreigner, died Wednesday at the age of 75. A rep for McDonald confirmed the musician’s death, adding that McDonald “passed away peacefully on February 9, 2022 in his home in New York City, surrounded by his family.” His son reported on Facebook that the cause was cancer.

So the Bob Saget situation seems odd.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/11/heal ... tures.htmlBut experts said that with such an extensive injury, it was unlikely that Mr. Saget would have intentionally ignored it. The injury would likely have left him confused, if not unconscious.
“I doubt he was lucid,” Dr. Bazarian said, “and doubt he thought, ‘I’m just going to sleep this off.’”
Some neurosurgeons said that it would be unusual for a typical fall to cause Mr. Saget’s set of fractures — to the back, the right side and the front of his skull. Those doctors said that the injuries appeared more reminiscent of ones suffered by people who fall from a considerable height or get thrown from their seat in a car crash.
The autopsy, though, found no injuries to other parts of Mr. Saget’s body, as would be expected in a lengthier fall. The medical examiner ruled that the death was accidental. The local sheriff’s office had previously said there were no signs of foul play.
“This is significant trauma,” said Dr. Gavin Britz, the chair in neurosurgery at Houston Methodist. “This is something I find with someone with a baseball bat to the head, or who has fallen from 20 or 30 feet.”
Dr. Britz noted that the autopsy described fractures to particularly thick parts of the skull, as well as to bones in the roof of the eye socket. “If you fracture your orbit,” he said, referring to those eye bones, “you have significant pain.”
