Damn, Madden. That's a gut punch. He and Summerall were the voice of every important NFC game for so many years. One of the few people that multiple generations knew for different things, Coach of the Raiders back in the 70s, lead color commentator for CBS then Fox, and of course the video game lives on.

Have a turducken in his honor.

Madden only did three years on MNF (2002-05) but it seemed longer than that.

Also, Dennis Miller was on MNF in 2000 but it doesn't seem that long ago.

I told this story before but a woman I used to work with grew up in San Diego a few houses from Madden when he was a coach for the Chargers and he kept her father alive long enough for paramedics to get there after her dad had a heart attack. He was a good guy.

If you didn't get a chance to watch the doc that Fox did on Xmas day, find it when it comes out on streaming. It was really well done and they could have gone another hour or two on it. When my dad and I watched it Saturday, he said that it felt like an obituary. Who knew how quick that would be true? What's great is Madden got to hear all of these contemporaries and people he influenced tell him how much that he meant to them. Supposedly, every person who sat for an interview also did a 60-90 second Xmas message.

Can't wait to watch the documentary.

Giant of both sports and media. Gotta be a League-wide memorial this weekend.

Heartbreaking:
Jeff Dickerson, a fixture at ESPN and in the Chicago sports market for two decades, died Tuesday of complications from colon cancer. He was 44.

In a cruel twist, Dickerson died at the same hospice care facility that his wife, Caitlin, died in two years ago. Caitlin Dickerson had undergone treatment for melanoma and its complications for eight years. Jeff Dickerson is survived by their son Parker, 11, and his parents, George and Sandy Dickerson.

Doubtful that it would make the listings with this short notice. It wasn't originally scheduled that way. Programming changed due to circumstances.

I was thinking the same and recorded the 9pm show. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't know about out-of-market folks, but as an Angeleno it is impossible for me to see words attributed to Vin Scully and not hear them in his voice.

The Fox show was pretty incredible. Seeing him watch what all those people remembered about him was poignant, but even more so knowing he got to do it shortly before he passed. Really well done.

We watched All Madden last night, and it was tremendous. Not sure how much of the reaction is contextualized by his passing, but we really enjoyed it.
