Was he on the Baseball Bunch? I vaguely remember Johnny Bench on that show, but there was another Saturday morning baseball show where Lasorda hosted/starred.

I loved Tommy Lasorda. As a little kid in the 90s, the jovial grandfather managing the opponent just had a certain appeal to it. One of my favorite baseball stories.
Piazza's father Vince grew up with the Dodgers legend in Pennsylvania, eventually even asking him to serve as godfather to Mike's younger brother Tommy. As the 1988 Draft approached, Piazza -- then a first baseman -- was largely ignored by scouts at Miami-Dade Community College, so his dad asked that Lasorda draft him if no other team would:

Lasorda agreed, finally convincing Dodgers scouts to take Piazza in the 62nd round, 1,027th overall. But that was just the beginning of an uphill battle -- L.A. still didn't want to sign the rookie, unsure if his bat would play at his current position. So Lasorda hatched an idea, as he told the San Francisco Chronicle:

I had him work out for our scouting director and after a while, I finally said, "I tell you what, if we brought a shortstop in here and he swung the bat like that, wouldn't you sign him?" He said, "Yeah, if he was a shortstop" I said, "What if he was a catcher?" He said, "I'd sign him if he was a catcher."

I said, "OK, he's a catcher." He said, "He's not a catcher." I said, "He's a catcher now. Sign him. All he wants is a chance."

The team eventually caved, signing Piazza for a mere $15,000. Lasorda had gotten him his chance, but it was Piazza who made the most of it. Without speaking any Spanish, he played winter league ball in Mexico and even trained at the Dodgers' baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, determined to get the hang of his new position.

I realized over the last couple of weeks that Trebek’s death has hit me harder than any other celeb death, maybe of my lifetime

There was a sincerity and simplicity to his personality on one of my favorite shows ever. Probably my most watched show after PTI

Vin Sculley’s wife died a few days ago, of ALS. Then he lost his buddy Tommy Lasorda. Tough week for him.

My dad was talking about this - the older he gets, the more friends and contemporaries he loses. He’s 79 and losing a high school classmate monthly it seems. He’s in good spirits, but man...

RIP Ueal Eugene "Pat" Patrick, one of the best-known team owners in IndyCar history, at age 91. Patrick Racing won the Indy 500 three times, and Patrick and Roger Penske co-founded CART in 1979, which wrestled control of Indy car racing away from the United States Auto Club by 1982 and became one of the greatest racing series of the world until ruined by some dadhole. Over the years, the drivers who raced for Patrick Racing included Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Gordon Johncock, Adrian Fernandez, Roger Mears, Scott Pruett, Al Unser, Al Unser Jr., Jimmy Vasser, and Danny Sullivan.

We have a In Memoriam page for those at our HS that have passed, and it seems like a lot of the updates lately have been for those +/- 2 years around me.

For not having reached our 30th reunion yet, I feel like our class has lost a lot of people.

So that leaves The Captain as the last real remnant of the White Paper era on the team boss side of things, yes?

What a pair of jags they were. But, there was a market for big cat torture shows so I guess you can't blame them for cashing in.
