Watched him in El Camino just yesterday. Shocked to see he was my dad’s age as well.

My Ph.D. advisor died in his office Saturday morning. No news has been released yet on how, why, when, etc. We just got word from one of his collaborators who did his best to e-mail as many former students as possible.
Guy was a horrible advisor, but I really liked him as a person. I have a lot of mixed emotions because I've been very angry with him for how my time in his lab ended. I feel bad for members of his group that don't have an advisor anymore. I feel bad for the department as I'm sure this throws a huge wrench into their logistics, not to mention he was a dear friend to many of them. But I think most of all I feel awful for his family. He was only in his late 50's. He had two kids in college (one getting his Ph.D. and the other still in undergrad). His wife is a fantastic woman, but she's originally from Japan and has no family here to lean on for support. Just all around a terrible situation.

That's really sad news...especially for his family, for sure. It's a little terrifying that no matter how much preventative stuff you do, when it's your time to go that's it.

Similarly we had a student in my school pass away this weekend, three weeks from earning his JD. He was a police officer for 19 years and went back to school to become a lawyer to do tribal law. Had a heart attack out of nowhere.

Yeah, and he was a pretty healthy dude... constantly on any of us for drinking soda, didn't eat red meat (in fact was largely vegetarian), exercised pretty regularly. Just bizarre/out of the blue.

Wasn't there a Robert Evans cartoon like 20 years ago? Something deep in my brain is trying to recall something.
