Former Pittsburgh Penguins center Greg Johnson, who spent parts of two seasons with the team in 1997, died Monday in Detroit at age 48, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

A cause of death was not immediately known.

A skilled center who was the University of North Dakota’s all-time leading scorer, Johnson came to the Penguins from Detroit in a Jan. 27, 1997 trade for winger Tomas Sandstrom. He was traded to Chicago for defenseman Tuomas Gronman early in the next season on Oct. 27, 1997.

In between, Johnson had eight goals and 17 points in 37 regular-season games for the Penguins. He also played in five playoff games, scoring a goal.

Yeah, that's really sad. Mitch Wilson was your prototypical AHL/IHL enforcer...I think he racked up over 400 penalty minutes multiple seasons. It's sad to say but I would not be surprised at all if his playing career led directly to him being diagnosed with ALS later in life.

Sad to hear about Torn; didn't realize he was in his late 80s. There was something about him that made me regard him as a sort of Joe McGrath/Strother Martin type in almost every role I knew him in.

He was always nuts.

Jerry Seinfeld and Alec Baldwin relayed a great story about some guy giving Torn the eye in a bar. He ended up getting hit with a bottle, and retaliated by punching one guy in the jaw and stabbing another with a fork. Dude was unhinged but seemed like an awesome guy if you knew him. He was awesome on Larry Sanders and I really enjoyed him on the first couple MiB movies too.

She had a terrible last year or so of her life with health problems. I heard she took a bunch of pills to just try and end it all a couple of days ago :(

I was kinda curious where the accident was since I was stationed down there for a year or two. Recognized where one road was but not the name of the second.
Pernell "Sweetpea" Whitaker, a former professional boxer, died Sunday night after being hit by a vehicle in Virginia Beach, according to police.

Whitaker was hit near the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road, police said in a news release.

The intersection: https://www.google.com/maps/@36.88347,- ... 312!8i6656

Having driven on that road more than a few times, I'm not sure I would cross that thing during the day.

Wow. Yeah as JS said, that is an extremely busy road. We travel it every year because we take US-13 down over the CBBT and head down Northampton Blvd. to hit I-64 on our way to the OBX. The speed limit is like 55 for good portions of that road and parts of it are like eight lanes wide.

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, who died at age 99, was the longest-lived justice in American history and the third-longest serving. Stevens was by all accounts an admirable and honorable man, and he had a history of public service extending back to WWII. I wasn't aware of it before today, but Stevens was part of the team of codebreakers that broke the Japanese military codes and enabled the mission that intercepted and killed Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto; Stevens was awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts. Stevens was undoubtedly a dedicated and influential judge. While I respect the man, however, I also believe that multiple of his majority opinions—such as Gonzales v. Raich, Kelo v. City of New London, and Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council—are among the most problematic Supreme Court decisions of the last several decades. Stevens was a good man, but his decisions empowered the government at the expense of the people, he was no great friend of individual liberty. RIP.
