RIP to Chadwick Haheo Rowan from Waimānalo, Hawaii, who as Akebono Tarō became the first foreign-born sumo yokozuna in 1993. Akebono's rivalry with the Hanada brothers—fellow yokozunas Takanohana and Wakanohana—led to a resurgence in the popularity of sumo in the 1990s, and Akebono won a total of 11 tournament championships and was a a runner-up on thirteen other occasions. He switched to Japanese citizenship in 1996 (a mandatory prerequisite for becoming a sumo coach) and was a oyakata or coach for Azumazeki stable for several years, but he left the sumo association in 2001 to pursue a brief mixed-martial-arts career before switching to Japanese professional wrestling, where he appeared for All Japan Pro Wrestling and several other promotions.

I first got into sumo while in college in the 90s, when ESPN had a sumo show called "Sumo Digest" that it would show at like 2 am to fill time, and I remember just how good Akebono was. That was a really good and competitive period for sumo, and I've been a fan ever since.

Although details were scarce, Akebono reportedly suffered a serious medical incident in 2017 that left him in a coma for several weeks, and on the few occasions he was seen in public since then, he was in a wheelchair and unable to walk. It now appears the 2017 incident was cardiac in nature, and the reported cause of death is acute heart failure. Chad Rowan, the 64th yokozuna, was only 54.

Over/under 2 months before new evidence "miraculously" comes to light that he did, in fact, do it?

I can still remember our elementary school gathering in a classroom to watch the verdict come in.

I wonder if we got a deathbed confession or apology. Likely not. This is one where the P would stand for peril instead of peace.

The best thing about OJ dying is all the love ol' Norm is getting today.

Not only did he kill two perfectly fine and serviceable people, he inadvertently loosed the Kardashians upon the world. (OJ, not Norm)

A couple of rough ones in my spectrum in the last 24 hours. I worked with both over the years and each was just an amazingly warm person. It really sucks when the good ones pass on too early while the trash of society hangs around and hangs around.

Moving memorial to my friend who died from cancer back in January here in Washington yesterday. Appropriately at his buddy’s bar. There were 8 of his co workers here and we felt so welcomed by his local friends and family. One of his employees came down from Johnstown and- this is the effect of covid and him having to isolate more than most due to the disease- had never met him in person. he had that sort of effect on people.

Great friend and co worker, I still get the irge to text hom over sports, music and other goofy stuff and I miss him every day.

Tim was not much of a hockey fan but he did support the Caps in the playoffs. He and my daughter had an ongoing smack talk battle. We stopped to see him on the way back from Emerald Isle in 2018 which of course was after the Caps won their cup following two for the Pens. Peak rivalry. The whole way she talked about how bad she was going to smack talk him (she was 11).

We got there and Tim being 6'4", she just stared up at him and said nothing. I'm like, come on, smack talk Uncle Tim!

Capper was to break the ice he went and got a half gallon of Capitals ice cream out of his freezer for her
