Rest in peace Brent. The father of my best friend, and a second father figure to me. Thanks for all the laughs.

Yeah, 'tis the season. My parents passed over the summer, and one of their best friends died last week. Two of my childhood friends' parents died a week or so apart in late December as well. I know this was coming, obviously, but man it's tough seeing that generation pass away.

The grieving for my parents has been different from what I'd expected. I figured I would be very sad for a short time after they'd each passed away, and that was true, but it seems to ebb and flow from day to day. I had a dream last night where something happened and I picked up the phone to tell my Dad but then remembered (in the dream) that he was gone and I couldn't tell him. I then woke up and began to cry. It's been tough, to say the least.

One of my best friends passed away on Friday. We'd met back in 2010 when our companies merged and he was my boss for a fairly short time. At the time he was dealing with non Hodgkins lymphoma and eventually needed a bone marrow transplant. They gave him a 30% chance of surviving a year but he battled hard and went in remission for a time. At that time, he said if it came back, he would not go to those extremes to fight it. It did eventually come back but required minimal (comparatively) treatment for years.

We were texting during the national championship game and to my knowledge he was doing alright. Got the call Wednesday AM that he was back in the hospital and on Saturday AM that he had passed on Friday night.

He lived every day to its fullest. Loved football and college basketball and we texted most nights about whatever games were going on (he lived in a different state). He was a big Packers fan and a bunch of former co-workers and I held a group chat during the game on Sunday. It was helpful talking about him and swapping old stories. Couldn't help but feel like he had something to do with their win.

He was probably the closest person to me who's passed away, except for my grandparents. He was a great friend and a co-worker who was a calming influence on our team. My daughter considered him "her rival" due to their competing sports team interests. She didn't take it well.

The hardest thing so far was working at home by myself on Tuesday, working on things he had also been working on and trying to come to terms with the loss. A lot of conversations with other friends and co workers got me through.

The last thing he ever said to me was "**** Harbaugh. Not watching him celebrate or listening to him either. Good night Ronnie!"

**** Cancer, man.
