This team is at worst 2 loss team with Slovis.

The defense stinks though. Only one guy to blame for that

I’m starting to think it was never really Slovis. I see two massive issues dating back to last year.

OL - They started out last year playing like crap but gradually improved to average, at least in the running game. In retrospect, the Tennessee game last year speaks volumes now. They got Slovis killed in that game - probably the source of his concussion - and he was never right after that. This year they regressed again, despite all the “leadership” coming back. They weren’t good against Wofford, they’ve had their asses handed to them by Cincy and WVU. VT had a pi$$-poor defense and they manhandled the OL. I’ve said this before but Zubovic and Kradel haven’t gotten markedly better since they started playing. Branson Taylor has regressed, Collier is a turnstile in pass protection and he’s routinely missing blocks in the run game. Baer and Moore are inexperienced. Maybe those two get better quickly and Taylor somehow finds his form from last year but none of this bodes well.

OC - Cignetti is the single worst coaching hire this program has made in 25 years not named Todd Graham or Mike Haywood, and I’m not sure Cignetti is that far behind those two. Even an average OC would have this team at least at 3-2 right now and maybe 4-1, because even an average OC understands how to get his players into positions to produce. Whipple built imperfect but productive offenses around Maurice Ffrench in 2019, DJ Turner, Vincent Davis, and true freshman Jordan Addison in 2020. Matt Canada certainly wasn’t perfect here but look what he did in 2016 with Peterman, Conner, Aston, Q. Henderson, Weah, and Orndoff.

Noah Hiles posted yesterday that after the third quarter, Bart had just one target and Mumpfield had just two. That’s not just unacceptable, it should be grounds for Cignetti to be fired. Yes, a lot of that is also on Jurkovec but even an average OC would work to get those guys into routes where it’s easy for the idiot QB to get them the ball (though as I type this, Phil probably just put another throw into Malcolm Epps’ feet).

I don’t think Cignetti will be back but I also don’t think he’s going anywhere until after the season ends, mostly because I don’t think Narduzzi has a viable Plan B.

Yea, watching Pitt on Saturday and watching the Steelers on Sunday and seeing the teams behave the same way is....exhausting.

I have a IRL friend that I used to work with and wrestled at Pitt and we follow each other on Twitter. Of course, Twitter is a shitshow with non-verified user posts and he was posting something about a Mark Madden comment about a coach who is only successful with a first round draft pick QB. I assumed, because of the time when Twitter decided to show me the post, I thought my friend was talking about Tomlin and Big Ben, but nope, the comment was about Narduzzi and Pickett. Tough to tell the difference.

Veilleux sucks too. Probably worse. This is also 2 weeks too late.

If you are going to take a chance, yes. Admittedly, theres no winners in this situation. Except if they would put Yarnell in. If they are going to lose, I would rather with the future than whatever this season is turning into.

Actually. editors note: I thought Christian was older than he is. I stand corrected and am more in favor of this than my original pessimism.

I was going to say, CV has like 3 years left, same as Yarnell.

This does not change any outlook on the season but it should at least give us clue about next year’s outlook

Yep.

I'd at least like to see if Veilleux or Yarnell can complete the things Jurkovec was still missing on when he had time. For example, when you run a designed QB rollout and run your TE to the flat on the same side, can Veilleux at least put the ball waist high or shoulder-high for Epps rather than skip it four yards behind his feet? We shall see.

I hate how much still depends on whether the OL can be something better than turnstiles, and whether Cignetti has any clue what he's doing.

I do have more faith in Veilleux than I had in Phil, in large part because I don't think Veilleux is damaged goods when it comes to mechanics and lingering effects of an injury. I also think Veilleux will be better now that he'll have more time to prepare in practice with the starters (he inexplicably got no snaps with the first team in the week after WVU and leading up to UNC).

And quite honestly, if Veilleux struggles consistently, I don't think Narduzzi will hesitate much to go to Yarnell. Like you said, the QB competition for next year starts next weekend.

Logan Thomas was a QB at VT. This is Phil's last chance to have a football career, what's the harm?
