How do you feel about tattoos?

Just curious... I know dodint dodints all the time about how terrible they are and I've seen others echo that feeling. Personally, I love them. I have one myself (plan to get more in the future) and I love seeing them on other people. They've always intrigued me. Anyways, take the poll. We'll see what the 5AF peanut gallery thinks...

99.9% of them look like trash. The 0.1% that don't are beauties.

I was going for, "I just don't get it."
So I picked I'd never get one myself. The full sleeves etc. make me cringe, mainly because they're on 30 year old or younger individuals. If you're into using your body as a canvas, that's cool, but you just ran out of canvas really early in life.

I have two, one of which has been inkus incompletus since 2002. I've dated inked girls in the past, as well. Mrs Tif is sans ink, and that's cool, too.

I voted I like them but wouldn't get one. That is the way I feel now, although I do want to get one, just scared to. So I wouldn't say "never".

But on others, some are pretty damn cool. Maybe one day I will have one.

I don't get most of them. I've been considering getting one but I'm not impulsive so it never happened.

The worst is people who get tats from an amateur and it looks like ****. Also, I've never seen a good tattoo that was just words

I used to be universally in the "people who have them are trash" camp.

I have mellowed with age and realize. I don't really care what someone does.

However, I wouldn't hire someone heavily covered in ink for a professional job. So I still have some bias.

I have two very concrete rules regarding ink:

1) No names

2) No faces

The only exception to the above would be your own children. But a supplementary guideline is that words in general are to be avoided unless there's some super special significance at play.

I now leave you with a tattoo of Bruce Lee using someone else's fist to bring the pain.

On dudes...no opinion.

On girls, a tatto has never made someone look better. Most of the time it makes them look worse. At best it's a net neutral (like mrs smenguin's ankle tattoo).

What meow said.

I thought about getting a tattoo when I was 16 and I'm super glad I decided against it.

The wife occasionally works at a VA clinic and she says when asked about having lots of ink, most men reply that at some point in their life they regret it. A tattoo of a anchor is fine, but these are the guys with faces, images, etc... Skin eventually loses elasticity and that ink goes with it.

On a woman, what shmenguin says. Except about his wife; I have never seen her tattoo so i can't judge.

Yeah, I just meant more that I made the comment in the other thread. Refreshed like 10 minutes later, no replies. Went back to the Off Topic forum and there was a tattoo thread with 7 replies. :pop:

So, the things that c2i posted are cool and all, but the overwhelming feeling for me is: "yeah...but.......why?"

I guess I just don't think to express myself in that way...thus the need for a poll I suppose...

Maybe I'll start wearing a bumper sticker on my ass...a real think piece like "Dukakis '88" or something...

I voted if theyre done well then yes.

I like meaningful tattoos like a family crest or something commemorating a lost loved one...

99% are trash though. Either meaningless or poorly done. Or worse, a sports team logo. Yikes.

I would get one if there was something important to get.

She thought it was cute. Like thats cool, hang a picture of one in your house then. No need fpr an all black sideways anchor on the top of one of the worst parts of your body.

They probably wonder why we complain about stuff on a messageboard with strangers.
