Spotted lanternflies are fcking out of control in the eastern part of the state. Thankfully, the only two trees we have on our property are two Japanese Maples that the lanternflies don't seem to have any interest in. They are crawling all over my neighbor's birch, all over the outside of our house, and we've had four make their way inside over the last 48 hours.

How come every nasty, destructive pest seems to come from East Asia? Stinkbugs, spotted lanternflies, etc.

I'm guessing the large quantities of imports from that area.

Because they have the farthest to travel to get here (making invasive species more likely to be harmful), but they have the highest crossover of travel meaning they are more likely to end up here vs something from Australia or South America. In other words, we do more trade and travel with China (increasing the probability that something might make it across the ocean) than we do with Brazil.

Michael Smerconish had a guest last week that talked about this. He and his family went out to dinner and were say under a tree that's the species this fly is attracted to and the spent the whole meal essentially being pooped on by the flies. And it turns out he has one of these trees in his backyard, so that's fun.

My favorite of these is the Cane Toads in australia. They put like 100 of them into the rainforests to eat some bug and now there's 200 million

Spotted Lanternflies prefer the Tree of Heaven especially for mating. But they will utilize other trees.

You should kill as many as you can and right now is the beginning of egg laying season. Adults can not survive the winter but the egg masses can. Scrape off the masses and destroy them!

I have killed hundreds of them this year. HUNDREDS. Last year, I saw two of them the entire year.

Karma is a dodint - obhave addition.

I might have yelled at a tow truck guy today who got under my skin ("listen here you, let me tell you how it is"), told him off and moved my car to a different place. Arrive back at the car and now the car wont start.

That's what I get for yelling at a 70 year old man. 90min waiting to see if he is the one who has been called to help me

My version of yelling is slightly raising my voice with a snippy tone, and telling him his reasoning was idiotic, that he lost the restaurant business today, and I was done listening to his reasoning and walked off ina huff. But usually I just smile and walk away when people are aggressive so this is the world telling me to go back to my polite self.

But still, I'm sitting in this car wondering if this is my punishment haha

Anyone who says "listen here you" is already in the jerk category for me

It was not him who came to help, thank goodness
