Sex. Like everything else.
Male fireflies also light up to signal their desire for mates – and willing females attract the males with flashes of their own.
Sex was definitely in the air tonight then. Some horny MFers

There seem to be more lightning bugs this year than the past few, but does it seem like there were many times more of them 20-30 years ago? I remember catching a ton very easily, but I don't think that's the case now.

I remember them being swarms in Alabama in the 80's. I haven't seen one since, anywhere. nowhere on the east coast, or as far west as New Orleans.

Yes to both. I've definitely noticed an increase this year. We were running around the yard at dusk last night.

Another fun thing to do at dusk... I love watching the bats fly around. If you throw a ball up in the air they will suddenly swoop towards it to check it out and then turn away when they realize it isn't food.

The plight of the little brown bat is one of the saddest stories in nature :(

Mom and her Cubs have been spotted on our hiking trail as well and I've been going with the camera to get some pictures (unsuccessfully) and here is one a block away from my house

That picture is a few years old. I remember Snopes had an article about it, how the paint crew marked the location and went back to repaint it later. But it’s still funny.

Sean McAfee of Johnstown did a double take on his way home from work late last week.

What caught the biker’s attention was a dead raccoon in the middle of Franklin Street. Not that unusual – except that this racoon had been painted over by a road crew.

“When I saw it, I almost wrecked my motorcycle because I was laughing so hard,” McAfee said.

According to a PennDOT spokesman, the incident Thursday, while embarrassing, was unavoidable.

“They did try to stop the paint gun,” District 9 traffic engineer John Ambrosini said.

“But with the amount of congestion Thursday, the squirrelly geometry of the road and the size of equipment, they couldn’t turn around to go back and fix the mistake.”
