Printer ink is one of the biggest ripoffs in the entire industry. From vendors using chips to prevent third party cartridges, to outright false “low ink” notifications. It’s all trash and they all do it. That’s why I’m reluctant to ever upgrade my current printer.

I have an Epson 3880 large format photo printer which I use for professional projects. It takes 7 different colors of ink and seems to need a head cleaning every time I use it, which wastes more ink. I just had to order cyan yesterday and it was $74. I use a cheap Brother laser printer for documents, manuscripts, etc. and that thing kicks ass. So much cheaper than an ink jet printer and I've never had a single issue with it.

I have an Epson printer too and I barely use it, but when I need to, the ink has dried up or evaporated down to the point where I have to replace it. So I basically just print everything out at work now.

I ordered refurbished ink cartridges this past summer and quickly found out just how scummy companies are with printers. I don't have the strength to recount it all, but at one point I found out the refurbished cartridges worked, but everything my HP printer was telling me was contrary to that.
Also, you should never update your printer if you don't have to. You run the risk of installing code that blocks "counterfeit" cartridges.
