I'm with mikey. In addition to spelling bee's we also had math bee's in our district, and I made the final 8 like three years running. You had to do all the math in your head and common core methods are exactly how I achieved that feat 30 years ago. It also sets you a step ahead when algebra starts and you start dealing with the distributive property and such.

If I have a piece of paper, often I'll use the old school method. I don't feel that one is better than the other, but its been an advantage to be able to do both without issues.
Parents are just angry they have to learn a new way of doing it.

You were taught addition and subtraction like this?

Sorry, I don't believe you.
I was never taught that way, but I tend to do it that way in my head or on the fly.

I said I learned how to do it that way, not that I got taught that way in school. Compensation method is often a breeze (although I never realized it had a name), and the place value method is a stepping stone to get 2 common core multiplication.

Not exactly like that per se. And I was never ever taught that or even a facsimile thereof. But that is roughly how I do things in my head. And I'm faster at math than anyone who pulls out their phone and bring up their calculator...the four major functions, percentages for tips, etc. all of it, I can zip through and it's largely because of this way of thinking...but it just made sense in my head, it was never taught...we were taught the dopey way...

That takes a year and a half and requires paper...ain't nobody got time for that...

I remember various math teachers telling us that we had to learn to do math by hand because there wouldn't be a calculator everywhere we went.
I do agree that it's important to learn the math without machines but:

I went to CVS this morning to pick up some Jell-O for my daughter only to find out that they no longer carry it. They carry "snacking pickles", but no Jell-O. Okay.

Do you generally do a lot of grocery shopping there? I assume it is nearby and convenient. I will rarely get cereal there when it is on sale but that is about the extent of my grocery perusal.

I never grocery shop at CVS, but it's around the corner and I wanted to get something that my daughter wouldn't have any trouble eating with her strep throat.

I don't know what happened, but your 6:37 post was the last one on my page. After I posted, shad's and your second one showed up.
