For the first time in my life, I'm passing up on a non-family wedding...
What's the general rule of thumb regarding still buying a gift anyway...? Which is a Looney Tunes concept to me, but I'd like to hear from the mature adults here...guide me in your infinite wisdom...

How close are you? Good friend? Definitely... If they lean more toward being an acquaintance than friend, nah.

So, I have a lot of guilt about not attending the wedding...it was lessened by how poorly this group of friends (which I'm not really a part of...) handled a bachelor party in NOLA. Including the groom, who talks a huge game about how much he can drink and blah blah blah, falling asleep twice before 10 pm out of three nights...including getting up from the finale dinner in the middle of it, saying nothing to no one, and ubering back to the airbnb to go to sleep at 7:30 PM on a Saturday night - our last - in NOLA...I could vomit in anger...anyway, that's all a story for another time...
Point is, one of my girl friends asked that same question when I was debating about whether I should go and cancel a vacation to Florida that I had planned for a while, but didn't quite have officially booked yet. "Where does he rank among friends whose weddings you wouldn't miss?" and he didn't make my top 10 off the cuff.
We talk pretty regularly via text, but we don't hang out very often - probably most often at open hockey.
Anyway, maybe a better question is: Is there like a "scale" to this? Where as a really good friend would get 100% of the expected gift, a good friend gets 50%, an acquaintance gets zippo...? Or is it just a binary thing? Gift [Y/N]?

I'm at the age now in my life where I write thank you cards for not getting invited to weddings.

You attended his bachelors party, text regularly, and play hockey together. Small gift, and go enjoy Florida.

Yup. Someone that was texting me about how he was drinking the New Amsterdam Pink Whitney's (a vodka/pink lemonade drink that comes in a bottle) on the rocks "because I'm an alpha male"...to which I responded how weird of a flex that was considering that's a mixed drink...and he doubled down by saying "How is it a mixed drink? It's 30% alcohol"
Then he said he can drink half a bottle of 90 proof whiskey on a bad night. He started drinking with me at 11 am local for college football and was completely handicapped by dinner time. I stayed out til 3:30 am, uber'd to the airport, hopped a 5 am flight and was home in time to watch the Colts at 1 Eastern...just completely brutal...the whole group was just so bad at drinking and going out, I split off from them and made new friends starting at around 9 local and just toured a bunch of bars that they weren't willing to go to...on a Saturday night...in New Orleans on a perfect night...
Crazy to me. I get I live a unique lifestyle and I'm not saying you have to do all the **** that I do...but to be sucking on your thumb before I would even consider going out on a weekday night at home, that's absolutely banana shenanigans...bananigans...

Okay... we get it. You're a cool kid.
I just don't understand your ramblings here and how it relates to your question. Again... You attended his bachelor party, you text regularly, and you play hockey together. Small gift.

I'm 36 and in bed by 10pm even on weekends most of the time (and up and at the gym by 7am). Mikey's lifestyle seems crazy to me, but it works for him. I mean I'm married and all, but I can't imagine partying like he does most of the time. It's lame to bail on your own bachelor party though that's for sure.

@mikey and please keep on truckin' and posting about it. I support your life decisions 100% as long as we get to hear about them

Flip side to look at:
Do you think at some point, either when they're doing shots around the bar, or they're all laughing it up on the dance floor, that they're going to say "man, mikey should be here." If they're not going to consciously miss you, it's cheap toaster or Bed, Bath, & Beyond gift card time (and only because you're going to continue to see the guy at hockey games regularly).

Haha Jesus, I don't think I even post that many stories...I'm a better verbal storyteller anyhow...but I'm not trying to be a hardo, I'm just trying to **** on my friend whose wedding I'm not attending...get your head in the game...
Interesting point, CBear...the answer to that is "no"...I'm very much an outsider to his friend group, the person that probably likes me the most is his wife - which she made clear one New Year's Eve years ago, but I was a good boy and took no action on that...
Anyway, the strangely irate mob has spoken...small gift and move on with life...it's very likely I'm going to have the best or at least top-3 weekend of my life in this wedding's place...so it's not like I'm replacing it with like a trip to the zoo or like a segway tour of a retirement community or anything dumb...it's going to be an absurdly good time in its stead...
Thank you for your attention in this matter.
As a small gift to you, I'll leave this relatable song that never made a studio album...
