Other countries never seem to have an issue with people taking artistic license for their national anthem.

I don't see that performance as being controversial or even bad (given the goal of that arrangement).

haha while that may be true, I have no idea...but is that something that you are actively monitoring?Other countries never seem to have an issue with people taking artistic license for their national anthem.

Not actively by any means.
But you rarely hear someone take O Canada off the rails quite like people handle the Star Spangled Banner.

And most of the time the people doing so are not Canadian. It's almost exclusively limited to American singers.

This is good-natured ribbing, but I'm thinking that's because we don't live in the country in question...moreover, we don't speak the language of what roughly a quarter of their people speak...
I don't hear about bank robberies in India either, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen

Again, that's probably the exception.
I can see butchering it because you don't know the lyrics. I'm talking when people take artistic license to add "flair" to the anthem because they'd rather make it about themselves.

I assume you're watching the first one, as the one I' posted is exactly what you're referring to with 'artistic license' here. As one commentor noted, what's with the James Brown moment in the middle?
The player reactions are the best part of that clip.

Right. I noted that as an exception.
Generally speaking, people singing O Canada or their home anthem don't take the same amount of artistic license that Americans do with the Star Spangled Banner.

My understanding of "bad anthems" is that the singer forgot the point of them and deviated far enough that it becomes a 'look at me' thing rather than a unifying experience. I think anthems at sporting events are dumb but if we're going to have them the point isn't to spotlight the singer, it's to have a collective moment to reflect upon whatever singing to fabric makes you want to think about.
The SJW angle of the Fergie thing, without reading anything about it other than I saw a subheadline saying she used a 'jazz' influence, is probably something like this: a white girl showed up at a black sport and culturally appropriated black music to call attention to herself instead of just paying respects to the state.
I bet I'm close in the sentiment if not the reporting.

Your understanding of my complaint is correct.

I say it - I liked Fergie's version of the anthem. Like, say, Marvin Gaye all those decades ago, she took the song and made it her own. At this point in her career, I think she is in the intersection of R&B, jazz, reggae, rock, whatever - and the anthem was all that.

It cuts both ways, too. Redneck McHillbilly sees her 'acting black' on national TV and gets his panties in a twist. An oldie but a goodie.
I'm not saying 95% of people feel this way on either side. I'm betting if I poke around I can find some Twitter heroes that align with either view.
I don't have a point, just lampooning Twitter idiots which is a total waste of keyboard strokes.

Fergie sounded like someone doing a bad Etta James impression.

The solution most of us can agree on is to knock it off with the anthems altogether. No way, race trumps sex.oh...i thought the SJW's would be defending her for being a woman who is experiencing judgement from menCan't believe she did this the opening weekend of Black Panther.oh dear god. this is a thing? The SJW angle of the Fergie thing
