How is common core math different from regular math? The neighborhood moms are all in a group text today about the first common core math examples and homework. Nobody is a fan of it, it seems. L
Neither am I, and I am not looking forward to the day that my daughter has to deal with it. I plan to show her the old way, as well.

It's not. It's how I have (AIUI) been doing math since I was 3. Find easy to work with numbers to solve things faster in your head...
What's 22 x 12? The hell if I know. But I know that 20 x 12 is 240 and now I have 2 12's left. That's 24. 240 and 24 is 264. I don't have to do that dumb **** math and adding a zero and all that...
My entire K-12 schooling I was the fastest at doing math and especially doing it in my head...just break stuff up into things you know and go. I add everything with 10s and pieces of 10 where applicable. There's no need to work with 22's or 147's...those are dumb numbers for idiots...use round things.

The box method for multiplication hasn’t really changed. Adding and subtracting, however, is a total **** show, as shown in the image above.

Odd question, maybe someone who knows something about Pittsburgh transit would have an idea:
Some kid came up to the door asking for money because "he lost his wallet, phone, everything" and needed $17.50 for the bus.
... there's no way a bus trip in Pittsburgh would cost $17.50 right?

Depends where he's going. He could be taking a Mega Bus or Greyhound. Not that I'd have believed him

That’s oddly specific.

I did not believe him.
Didn't help there was a running car parked near the end of our driveway that I noticed. He said it was someone he stopped. Again, red flags.

It's okay. They'll probably just break into your house tonight and murder you in your sleep.

Car sat there for 15-20 minutes, then left.

Old scam. Provide some pity story, explain what it will take to help, give weird number close to $20 hoping you’ll just give them a $20.Odd question, maybe someone who knows something about Pittsburgh transit would have an idea:

Had a guy try this on me twice a week apart.

I had someone try to do that with me on an Amtrak ticket once...he said he had one but lost it. I was like, "yeah, you can just tell them your name and it won't matter..." and he's like, "can you just front it, just in case and then I'll give it right back if everything is cool..."
Sounds good, bud. You want to dump a load in my old lady too while you're at it...

The satisfaction in my wife's voice when she says Alexa stop after I've been telling her to play Captain Beefheart is off the charts.

I think there is a place for both math versions. I know I use both at different times and I am happy that our school here is not strictly all in on common core. I was pleasantly surprised to see old math just last week in their homework.

I agree. The place for common core addition and subtraction is in the trash can. I have fewer issues with the multiplication standards. We did a little of the box method when I was in school, and if it helps you multiply, that's fine. I still use the old method in my head.

I'm with mikey. In addition to spelling bee's we also had math bee's in our district, and I made the final 8 like three years running. You had to do all the math in your head and common core methods are exactly how I achieved that feat 30 years ago. It also sets you a step ahead when algebra starts and you start dealing with the distributive property and such.
If I have a piece of paper, often I'll use the old school method. I don't feel that one is better than the other, but its been an advantage to be able to do both without issues.

You were taught addition and subtraction like this?
