The only negative hit to my credit report since around 2012 or so was a missed credit card payment 2-3 years ago. I fat-fingered the payment info as $15,000 instead of $1,500, and, well, I didn't have $15,000 in my checking account (and didn't have a balance on the card anywhere close to $15,000), but instead of flagging it as a "do you mean to do this" kind of thing, they just returned the payment and dinged my credit report.

Called the PNC number I was given on the new notice (what must be their L3 support center).

They state that Wells Fargo, the issuing bank, is the one refusing the check image, and that their bank should still have the money for the check. JCP should not be showing it as cashed. Which I guess is good but also means now I get to fight with JCP who has essentially non existent customer service.

This is all my wife's fault for buying me a stupid JCP gift card instead of just letting me buy my own birthday present.
