Well that's disappointing. There was a really smarmy butthole of a reply to that Tweet and I would've pegged you for having the same information 10 times out of 10.

Google to the rescue!

“Altoona-style pizza“ baffles the nation—including Altoona itself
Yesterday, via the gift that is Twitter, I learned about a little something called “Altoona-style pizza,” which involves salami, green bell peppers, and, for some reason, American cheese. Know who else learned about it yesterday? Most of the residents of Altoona, Pennsylvania, including its local news team:

Shortly after the original tweet went viral, Ryan Detto, an intrepid reporter for the Pittsburgh City Paper, was hot on the case. He found Altoona-style pizza on the menu of a restaurant called 29th Street Pizza Subs & More and tracked down its owner, Steve Corklic. Corklic told the City Paper that the style originated sometime in the 1960s or ’70s at the Altoona Hotel. The base is a thick-crust Sicilian-style pizza dough, which is then slathered with sweet tomato sauce, covered with sliced deli salami and sliced green bell peppers, and topped with a layer of melted yellow American cheese. Corklic says that in the original recipe, Altoona-style pizzas were covered with Velveeta, but he prefers using American cheese at his restaurant.

If, after the initial shock of all this news wears off, you find yourself morbidly curious about what Altoona-style pizza tastes like, head to the 5:10 mark in that video above to see a brave newscaster take one for the team. Then mark Altoona on your regional pizza road trip map.

Al's Tavern is at the end of the street where we lived when I was born, and it was a popular post-hockey hangout for me and my friends in the years before I moved. Been there probably hundreds of times, and I've never heard of it (or Nonna's Pizza, for that matter).

Yet another reason to dock ten more points from Altoona imo.

My bad, it's written right on the sign. "Yellow American."

Sounds racist on top of being putrid.

I don't think this has been posted here. But wtf Altoona people

I've got 24 years on Twitter guy; I was born and raised there, and I've never heard of such a thing.
I'm happy to explain.

There was a former establishment in Altoona called the Altoona Hotel. Yes, they made a "pizza" that is very similar to the one in the photo. I have had it on one or two occasions during my childhood and possibly as an adult. TBH, if you don't go into it thinking of it as "pizza", I remember it being better than expected.

This "style" was something unique to the Altoona Hotel and was kind of their signature. In other words, it isn't "Altoona style" pizza, it was literally one pub that was known for it.

I like the yokel at the end yelling stuff after the doors are closed for like two whole beats at least...everyone was outside, doors were open, you could have said your piece...instead, you're that guy, who after the linesman comes over and starts holding people back that starts talking about how he's going to punch your head in and eat your children and that I'm lucky the linesman is here...get lost, pal...

I'll presume this is some trash hole chain restaurant...

I have a friend that married a girl from the York area and she recently posted that Plandemic movie on Facebook, so that video doesn't surprise me in the least

As you probably know I'm in Lancaster County. Not that there aren't plenty of yokels here, but as you go west and cross the Susquehanna, it gets worse. Even western Lancaster County (Columbia, for example) is known for its white trash (and yes, thug life types)

This is from a 1970s BBC documentary TV series called Connections. Examines the sort of technological 'butterfly effect' of how this-lead to this-which lead to this other thing-and that's how you start with 6th century Burgundian dukes issuing credit for the first time ultimately lead to the development of the Thermos which brought us the rocket engine.

Just a fantastic show, highly recommended.

Went to Columbia once for a basketball game when I was in HS. Definitely a place I didn’t want to go back to and the home team wasn’t even playing.

I've been in Al's a couple times. Good wings if I remember correctly. I have no recollection of "Altoona Pizza".

Just saw the weirdest thing. A blue jay and a robin were fighting a male and female cardinal in a tree and a crow landed near by. Looking like he was just chillin watching the fight. All four bird started attacking the crow and they all flew away.

Nature is weird.

Surprised the Blue Jay didn't try and kamikaze the rest afterwards. They bully everything.

We were hanging out in our backyard a couple days ago and had a very large hawk fly low overhead. Was pretty cool.

A few weeks ago we added a bird feeder to our backyard, so we've had a big increase in aerial activity. And also cats.
