So, the cancer is back. The same exact kind she had six years ago. It's the realization of a 5% chance of recurrence. Bummer. The lymph nodes nearest the biopsied lump are not cancerous so we're really hoping it contained the spread.

She's conveyed that if the cancer has metastasized and spread she doesn't want to treat. My mind is already wandering to whether we've already shared our last great moment. Which is pretty devastating if I'm honest. One of the most powerful expressions of love I've ever witnessed was my MIL's decision to let my FIL pass in peace. I feel like I'm capable of that level of love myself, but I'm aching at the idea of having to test it so soon. I don't even know how to process the outlook of a life without her. We're just so happy in love and in life I don't even know what it's like to be any other way.

Hopefully this is all premature. Nothing left to do right now. She'll see her doctors next week, hopefully get some definitive imaging, and come up with a treatment plan, if needed.

Yeah, thanks. The first time she beat it was in coastal NC, so Pittsburgh is a healthcare megalopolis compared to what we had to work with the first time. If we caught it and it's localized I'm 100% sure that we'll be on a good road in a couple of months.

The fact that she went straight to the 'consider the possibility this is untreatable' really took my legs out, though. She has everything going in her favor (early detection, physical fitness, awareness, works in healthcare) but she also wasn't supposed to be in the 5% either so who knows what's next.

Thanks. She wants to keep it quiet until after the holidays which blocks off a lot of my support structure, so it's nice to have a place to vent a little. The gravity of this didn't really hit me until I wrote that first post earlier.
