They are doing such an incredible job of adapting this material, keeping what works, changing what doesn't (or what must be different for TV reasons), adding only what makes sense.

Also, the scene where Joel teaches Ellie how to hold a pistol caught Mrs Tif off guard. Her dad just passed away last year, and in life he was not just a cop he was a big deal pistol instructor. So the moment mirrored some of her favorite memories of him, thinking about the two of them bonding and him being in his element and such.

Good episode. I'm one of those people who had no idea about anything with this game/show. I was surprised to see it was a fungus zombie show only for there not to be a lot of zombies. After 4 episodes, I still haven't felt like it's set it's tone except it's another post apocalyptic story. I think the humans are scarier than the zombies and I have no idea what's going on with the ground thing (giant fungi monster?) , But I can't wait to find out Friday

I didn't play the game, but that was originally Pittsburgh in the game. I remember seeing sreenshots everywhere when it first came out.

In the game they travelled to Pittsburgh, they cut that out in the show.

Also things are gonna pick up big time next week if they follow the game based on the characters that showed up at the end of the last episode.

In the game, that part was set in Pittsburgh. For the show, they set it in Kansas City. Listening to the HBO podcast, Mazin said it being set in Pittsburgh wasn't important (Neil Druckmann, who is also on the podcast, said that Mazin hates Pittsburgh. Mazin then apologized to Joe Manganiello jokingly [he doesn't hate Pittsburgh]). Also, they wanted to move the plot/pacing further west, and finally, the part of Calgary they were shooting in didn't look like Pittsburgh.

the only thing that would bother yinzers more than leaving the city out of the show would have been filming in Calgary and calling it Pittsburgh

As Ellie is looking at the freeway map and explaining "76 West, to 70 West..." you can see Pittsburgh has been scratched out in red ink, like "DO NOT GO HERE".

I think it's as they encounter the blocked underpass with the jack-knifed Sara Lee truck (damn flour products), Ellie asks where they are and Joel says "Kansas City". (And in the preview for Ep 5 Kathleen is shown talking to a group of...... subjects? and says "Haven't you heard? Kansas City is freeeeeee.")

Also........................

THE LAST OF US Surges to 7.5 Million Viewers Sunday Night in Third Consecutive Week of Audience Growth
Episode 4 of THE LAST OF US delivered another series high Sunday night, with 7.5 million viewers across HBO Max and linear telecasts. Viewership was up 17% from Episode 3 last Sunday and 60% above the series debut night in January. Viewing is based on Nielsen and first party data. The series has grown its audience each Sunday night with the release of new episodes.
Not sure how relevant Nielsen numbers still are, but they seem quite taken by them. And it is quite a funny on the heels of the Ep 3 review bombs. lol

It was up against the Grammys, too. Although I doubt the Venn diagram of Grammys watchers and TLOU watchers shows a lot of overlap.

Would meow or Weenie be so thorough? I should think not. One would be too consumed with the agenda for their next meeting to offer anything remotely akin to productivity and the other would be like "what's a February".

Episode 5 spoilers:
Solid episode but the big monster guy was the first time I rolled my eyes and was reminded that this series is based on a video game. That didn’t translate to this world at all. I’m sure in the game it’s a fun escalation but it gave me Resident Evil movie vibes and that doesn’t mesh with this world at all, or at least how I’ve built this world in my head. The action scene here felt straight out of a video game (and not in a good way). Kind of has me worried about what’s to come considering games have to continue upping the difficulty. But it’s a small part in an otherwise good episode. The character moments in this episode were fantastic.

I very much enjoyed this episode. I've felt the video game overtones in every episode, so nothing really bothered me here regarding the cave troll scene.

It took 3 weeks of night shoots to film the end sequence, from when they leave the tunnel until they leave the street/cul de sac.
All that for 10-12 minutes of run time.

Ok, I'm behind, haven't started watching, never played the game, but everyone says to watch. Am I going to be lost if I never played the game. I'm sure you answered before, but I'm lazy.

I haven't played the game and I'm happy about that. I get to enjoy the show for what it is, rather than constantly comparing it to the source material. And after the show ends, I'll get to play the game and pretend it's based on the TV show.

The differences are simultaneously substantial and minimal. The show is it's own thing, don't worry about it. It's no different than if they were adapting a book; if you need familiarity with source material, it's a poor exercise in both adaptation and storytelling.
