Pirates Offseason Thread 2022-23
I found this interesting while looking up stats on baseball-reference.com. The Pirates run of good play from 2013-2015 had a lot to do with their pitching. They were innovative in creating a team full of groundball type pitchers and good defenders, on top of lights out relievers that you could rely on for the 7-9 innings of a tight game. Not many teams at the time were doing this, which the data shows (this is all of MLB).
It appears that teams caught on to this in 2016 as CG and SHO drastically dropped, I assume due to the reliance on relievers. It could just be a coincidence, or perhaps the Pirates were on to something but were unable to keep up and continue to innovate. I also think right around 2016 is when teams started swinging for the fences more often, which explains the uptick in HR/9 and SO/9.

Travis Sawchik wrote a book about the Pirates process and success back then. The issue was the rest of the league caught up, and the Buccos stopped innovating (and probably a lot of the innovators left for greener pastures).

Looking at his numbers he's not a liability, and the leadership aspect will be nice. I like it. Would be cool if they started to turn it around this year and he was a part of itHe stinks now, but he stinks in a more productive way than say a jake marisnick

Cutch! Very cool

I'd love the move so much more if this wasn't going to be done to create some good will when they inevitably dump Reynolds for guys who won't see the majors for 2-4 years.
Hopefully they prove me/us wrong, but I think it's coming.

I hope if Reynolds goes they get someone who can play OF because they still would only have one major league OF (cutch) and have to figure out how to fill two other spots with a bunch of question marks.
Although Andujar is KC's 2023 dark horse selection

Cutch needs like 80 games in OF and 50-60 DH. I don't think we should rely on him as an every day OF

Cutch Suwinski Andujar and Mitchell should be enough to eek out some digestible at bats in the OF. Key word here is should.
I like cutch so I'm glad he's here

When they trade Reynolds, mccutchen will at least do a better job hitting in a middle of the order spotLooking at his numbers he's not a liability, and the leadership aspect will be nice. I like it.
