I have an '03 Camry that had a tape player, but upgraded with a CD mod kit when the radio died. Also has the ebrake and even has overdrive!Yes! And get this, they even have this lever called an ebrake rather than a button and it's terrific for doing car tricks in the snowOh, a classic car!It also has something called a CD player which I don't believe is a thing anymore. The kids love all the giant cases filled with hundreds of these compact discs in the backseat taking up all the spacious leg room.If it has A/C then it's a luxury car.I've got an 06 Hyundai sonata with 20k miles if anyone wants to DM me about all the luxuries

I have some friends that did similar stupid investing in the past couple years. Got heavy into cryptocurrency, made a ton, one guy put a lot of his 401k into it, then they all got burned.

I don't think it's apples to oranges, I think of it more like Gala to Fuji to Granny Smith. In fact, I would say that the biggest stumbling block EVs still face in today's market is the self-imposed 'othering' of EVs. From styling, to model naming conventions, to marketing...... I am not going to use the thing any differently than I do a gas-powered car, why try to sell it to consumers as this markedly different thing? Just make a good car, and instead of the ICE and transmission, load it up with batteries and such. And away we go.Tesla is basically in a field of its own, because there's really not much of an EV market to compare to. I think that's how it should be judged, as you can't really say this battery powered, electric motor is luxurious compared to this 3.5L 325HP ICE. Apples to oranges. You could judge the interior, but there's more to a car than just the shiny toys on the inside and outside.
They're in competition for the same consumer dollars for vehicles that do the same jobs. In order for an EV to be any good, it must first be good at the V part. The E is just how its powered. If in delivering all the stuff that comes with being an E car makes all the rest of it suck, then that's valid to point out in comparison to non-E options.

The Tesla S and X are for sure what I would call 'luxury' cars. Their comps are cars like the Mercedes EQS and Porsche Taycans; the SUV segment eludes me so I don't really know what a valid model-to-model comp would be for an X. Tesla still has the Apple ethos of positioning themselves as a lifestyle brand as much as a car company, and so they carry a premium price. But a fully specced out P100D of either stripe is legitimately a $150k car imo.
The 3 is very much a fair-to-middlin affair, and I have always thought they were massively overpriced, even at their initial target price which they never came within a belly laugh of delivering. The 3 started its life as "oooh, I'm a less expensive Tesla!", and beyond that doesn't really offer much. Putting the EV aspect of it aside (because an EV must, first and foremost, be good at being a 'V' for anyone to care about the 'E' part), I'd rather have my Mazda3 than a Tesla 3.
To be clear here: They aren't bad cars, by any means. These aren't like gen-1 Priuses.
The 3 and Y have become completely ubiquitous where I live, as common as equivalent BMW, Merc, Lexus, etc models. After that in popularity would be the S, and the X is still somewhat rare. Sightings, generally, in my neighborhood have skyrocketed in the last year because they just opened a Supercharger in the plaza where I do a lot of our grocery shopping. It was not unusual for me to see 20 or more Teslas in the 6-mile round trip to that center before that, now there's also all the vehicles parked and charging.

The original beef was with Tesla selling more vehicles in a completely arbitrary category. There's probably a category for best selling coupe, sedan, SUV, truck, van, hatchback, economy, budget, and on and on. Just make a new category: EV's.

the dumb door handles on Teslas are enough for me to not consider them luxury. Whenever a Uber picks me up and it’s a Tesla I spend at least 15 seconds trying to open the stupid ****

Yeah, that's a vehicular PEBKAC error.

I mean, it's not like every time a Tesla rolls up on you they've switched the way the door handles work. That strikes me as a very Three Seashells type of complaint.

What's the old saying about the "bear proof" garbage can design in Yellowstone? I think it goes something like "There's a lot of overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest humans." Or something to that respect.

And of course the person causing the traffic issue sustains the least amount of damage, per usual.

I've ridden in a Tesla...four times in my life? it's something that doesn't happen often but has happened twice in the last couple of months and my monkey brain was getting annoyedI mean, it's not like every time a Tesla rolls up on you they've switched the way the door handles work. Don't feel bad. It's a stupid form over function design.

But seriously, my Nest doorbell stops working when it gets too cold; thing completely drops WiFi and has to be restarted (when it's warmer). That's stupid.

Incorrect, Cali man. If the handle is frozen shut, you have to update your software, then go to the app, tap and hold an icon to customize the controls, add the "unlatch door" icon, then tap the icon to open the door.
I guess it's not too difficult once you update the software and set up the app, but having to use an app to open your door is stupid.

Should have bought a higher quality - luxury, even - doorbell. My Ring has literally been covered in ice and worked perfectly fine. But seriously, my Nest doorbell stops working when it gets too cold; thing completely drops WiFi and has to be restarted (when it's warmer). That's stupid.

We have two sub $50 doorbells and they both worked no problem when it was -5°. Git gud.

Pardon, it's just been like my entire adult life since I've laid eyes on weather related ice, so this is a very funny concept to me.My Ring has literally been covered in ice and worked perfectly fine.
