Tesla does not make non-luxury cars by any competent person's standards.

See, I can do that too.

I don’t understand how Tesla isn’t a luxury car brand

Not going to die on this hill at all, I am probably the definition of “not a car guy”, but my understanding is that Tesla is not really able to make and sell a low end, affordable model.

I know I would never set foot in a Tesla that didn’t cost over 80k

I believe Musk to be a dope just as much as the next guy, but Tesla is a luxury vehicle. Weird conversation.

I never really thought about it before but cost doesn't automatically equate to luxury. Jeep Grand Wagoneers are six figures. Same for high end trucks, etc. They're just expensive utility vehicles.

I have never driven a Tesla but my understanding is they are one trick ponies and have pretty sparce option sets and amenities. It would be like calling an iPhone a luxury cellphone.

Yeah I agree with @dodint ...how are we defining luxury car? If we are going by cost..sure Tesla is expensive so yeah they are luxury.

If we are talking actual amenities and options...then no they aren't luxury at all.

Does Tesla not have heated seats or something? what are these "amenities" that a standard luxury car has that Tesla doesn't.

And also, not having to go to gas stations is a luxury

lmao not having to go to gas stations is not a luxury - because they still in fact have to go to gas stations.

Build quality is about the best gold standard you can use to determine whether it's a luxury car or not.

What luxury amenities and options is, say, a Tesla Model S lacking? If it would help, here are the respective specs for the Tesla Model S and the Mercedes EQS from Car and Driver:

I would consider any vehicle that has a McIntosh stereo in it to be luxury:

I'd say luxury is a threshold defined by certain options a car would come with as a stock option. A Toyota Camry you could probably get with non-powered windows, so it's base package is very bland. A BMW base option would probably include heated seats.

Performance, safety, transmission, engine...those are also used to set a threshold. A 1.2L engine wouldn't be found in any luxury vehicle.

Tesla is basically in a field of its own, because there's really not much of an EV market to compare to. I think that's how it should be judged, as you can't really say this battery powered, electric motor is luxurious compared to this 3.5L 325HP ICE. Apples to oranges. You could judge the interior, but there's more to a car than just the shiny toys on the inside and outside. Unless you're NTP66, then upsell him on the shiny things.

I still go "Woo, that's a Tesla!" everytime I see one. I park near a couple of them at school and they are quite popular in my immediate area, so they aren't rare any longer. There is still a mystique about them.

But the sales news are good for the electric car industry as a whole.

Can a non-Tesla charge at a Tesla Supercharger? Probably not, right?

No. Tesla uses proprietary chargers. The rest of the industry uses the standard J1772 charger. It's one of the reasons why the auto industry dislikes Tesla.

An article on Tesla and other charging plugs:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtemple ... 12a8542e45

Telsa in November 2022 said that anyone could use its plug design, no strings attached, as the "North American Charging Standard” (NACS). The Tesla plug design is way smaller and better than the "Combined Charging System" (based on J1772 with extra pins) used by most other companies.

I can tell you that that isn't going to happen.

There’s no official definition of what makes a luxury car a luxury car and thus this conversation is dumb

It feels like a marketing award more than anything

If it has A/C then it's a luxury car.

It also has something called a CD player which I don't believe is a thing anymore. The kids love all the giant cases filled with hundreds of these compact discs in the backseat taking up all the spacious leg room.

Yes! And get this, they even have this lever called an ebrake rather than a button and it's terrific for doing car tricks in the snow
