Does anyone know (paging @Orlando Penguin) what the rhyme or reason is to weekend, especially Sunday, pairings? ie I feel like they used to go off in actual pairs more often than they do now, and also never split tees. Is it a tournament by tournament decision or is this just a new thing every week

They go in 3's until we get to the East Coast. CBS/NBC want either a 6 or 6:30 finish which means you have to have the final group go off by 10:30 local at Pebble and LA and 11-11:15 in Phoenix. Considering that everyone wants golf off the air long before the Owl kicks off, this is the way they have to do the tee times. Once the Tour gets to the East Coast AND there's Daylight Savings in effect, then there's a lot more sunlight to work with and they can go in pairs.

Also think of it like this - 66 players made the cut in Phoenix. If you wanted to do 2’s, that’s 33 tee times. Spaced 10 minutes apart, you need 5 1/2 hours. First tee time Thurs/Fri was 7:20 (and they barely beat darkness both days). So the last tee time would be 12:50 making final putt drop around 5-5:15 (7-7:15 eastern). Not terrible...except on Owl Sunday.

This is good imo. Let these guys shoot the pin and quit fiddling through yardage books. Speed things up

Allowing the distance devices isn't going to change one ounce of pace of play. They'll still go to their yardage books to look at green slopes and other distance markings that they or their caddies have made during practice rounds.

I haven't really been following his come back from injuries last year but he and JT are probably my favorite two golfers on tour right now (other than Tiger obviously) so it was a nice surprise to see that he won

I hadn't realized that Brooksy had went over 18 months without a victory on tour.

No one wants to play Pebble and Spyglass. Wtf. The new schedule ****ed this tournament hard

You can blame the money grab in Saudi Arabia for that as well. A quick cursory look shows that only Casey, Phil, Rafa, Aphibarnrat, and Min Woo Lee are playing Pebble who played in SA. That knocks out DJ, Rose, Stenson, Reed, Bryson, among others. The Tour schedule for the West Coast has largely stayed the same over the years. If ever there was a year for there to be a really good field, it would be this one because there's no amateurs involved, which is always a knock for the big guns to play this event. But it is pretty stunning that Sanderson Farms has a better strength than Pebble does this week.
