People yell idiotic and inane things. That's different from cheering.
Imo i would never accuse slappy brown of a true bad take becuase i respect the hell out of the man and what he stands for

But his golf-cheering take is not a good take. As Frederick Rumsen alluded to, people yelling inane things have nothing to do with the actual outcome of the performance. They are all yelling to be noticed and to get a few chuckles out of the crowd. Yellers dont care if john Rahm actually makes his putt; they just want to make themselves part of the action.

I blame social media for the yelling. It is no longer good enough to enjoy an invent. People have to make it about themselves.

People were yelling ‘you da man’ and ‘get in the hole’ long before social media.

You couldn’t have ‘arena’ cheering at golf events because of the precision involved in playing the game. Think of yourself being over a shot and right as you take the club back, some grounds crew staff starts up the mower. How does your shot end up? Now multiply that for when the crowd plays favorites. It would lead to a lot of uglyness when people started riding Poulter or Sergio late on a Sunday. The Ryder Cup at Hazeltine toed the line of civility at times.

Yup. I'm sure there are plenty of people that would drone on about "snowflakes", but the simple fact is that the movements in golf require an absurdly high degree of precision that simply doesn't exist in other sports. If you are a few centimeters off, that's the difference between piping it down the fairway or hitting it OB. Way too easily affected by twitches.

Allow me to (1) thank KtK for his respect and kind words; (2) condemn the traitor ulf; and (3) clarify that golf is generally not a fun, good thing. I love to smack the hard long ball with the best of them, but 4-5 hours on a weekend? Pass.

In addition, I am not looking to add more "who's the man!" or "get in the hole!" or "Mashed potatoes!" to the event. I mean outright, full throated screaming. Perhaps mating calls, various instruments, the Denver Broncos naked barrel guy, that sort of thing.

Going out on a cool, sunny morning around 7 AM to tee off is one of the most wonderful feelings in the world. I get giddy knowing I've got all that golf ahead of me.

To add, being done with a round at 11 and having a whole day ahead of you is also a gr8 feeling

We did an 8 am tee off in late April with that logic. Ended up being 37 degrees at tee off.

Not something I'd recommend.

Golfing my first round of the year this weekend, at Sinking Valley outside of Altoona. @count2infinity have you played there? I'd like to get back out with you at some point this is a whirlwind weekend of family visits.

From what I remember it's a beautiful, wide open course.

I have not.... it's one of the few courses in the area that I just haven't made it to. Hopefully in future years, I'll get back into golfing. For now I'm pretty much limited to my company outings and maybe one or two more rounds beyond that.

Looking to expand my horizons a bit

Fort cherry (for easy play) or quicksilver (to challenge yourself a little).

I was gonna suggest Quicksilver if MR25 usually shoots under 95 or so. Otherwise that might be a long day

Quicksilver is a fun course. Used to play there a lot when I lived in Robinson.

birdsfoot is my favorite public course to play. its a hike but is enjoyable.
grandview is a stupid course, blind shots, very hilly, penal. but the views really are grand (great vistas of kennywood)
totterridge in greensburg is good. i prefer birdsfoot if you are going to drive somewhere.
3 lakes in verona/monroeville/plum isnt bad.
links at spring church in apollo is OK for the price

I'd wager I'm around a 15-20 handicap. Putting hasn't been great lately.

Tiger quietly posted another Top 5 finish this past weekend. It's clear he is pretty much back to 100%, and he has finished 7th and 12th at Carnoustie. I'm guessing the course setup will be closer to 2007 than the nightmare in 1999

His putting is significantly better. The biggest issue with him is that while he is carding a ton of birdies, he's also making a bunch of mistakes that's preventing him from scoring lower. He's been all over the place. Are you arguing that he hasn't progressed since 2015 or so? I'm not saying he's going to win the Open

I just said that he's contended at Carnoustie and he seems to be back to 100% health-wise.
