I had a golf lesson yesterday with a different instructor than my lessons last year. Basically had to redo a bunch of thing, change my setup and use my hands and wrist to increase club head speed.

I almost need to swing like a grandpa right now with feet together. I hit the ball straight and far with that drill. Going to stick with this guy through the winter, if I can hit a driver 225 and straight with basically just my wrists, I should be adding a ton of distance when I learn to use those pieces in a full swing

That's a lot of change. Curious to hear how the progression goes.

Watched someone finish off a golf tournament by hitting their last **63** greens in regulation. I don't care if you're man, woman, or cyborg, that's off-the-charts good.

And geez, not a peep on here about some guy hitting a soft wedge on the range that destroyed the golf tweeter today?

Was it Phil? If it's overblown and wedge related it has to be Phil.

*edit* Oh, yeah,

I am happy for him in the sense that it is good that he is walking at all. I do not anticipate a meaningful return to golf for him so it wasn't a huge deal to me when I saw it. Probably because I saw the video of him walking unaided at his son's event earlier.

Find it hard to believe that he will be able to play at a competitive level again. Glad that he’s trying, but he was showing age before the accident.

Anyone use ascending or descending weight shafts in their irons? Ping has a shaft they sell (made by Nippon) that are steel. But they're progressively lighter as you work your way from the short irons to the long irons:

Image

I like the idea of it. I'm using graphite in my driver, driving iron, and hybrids. This would blend into that and maybe give me a bit more head speed with the 4i/5i.

My current set is a 115g steel shaft and it feels heavy to me, so I'm looking at some lighter options. But for some reason almost every set that Ping offers has a weight between about 95g and 115g. So I'd have to commit to a pretty big weight drop to go lighter. Except for these AWT shafts which live right in that zone.

I'm guessing the concept there is lighter long iron > more club head speed > better trajectory, with the heavier short iron > more deliberate swing > more consistent contact?

Yeah. It's attractive to me because it reduces the step from my 2-crossover to 4i.
The crossover is 76g and my current 4i is probably pushing 120g.
With that AWT shaft, it would only be a jump of 76g to 99g, so a delta of 21g.

They used to sell another shaft called the CFS that did the opposite. The long irons were heavier than the short irons. I feel like that would mess me up when I jump to one of my graphite clubs. Especially since my specialist wedges are using 118g shafts.

how the hell do you find these things like this shaft stuff dodint?

I’m not saying you’re one of them because you made some big strides in your first year of golf but you remind me of the people who suck at golf and are always looking at new equipment etc thinking it’ll help. Nothing beats good ol mechanics

You're right, I'm not seeking out new gear to fix my game. I am interested in equipment generally, probably one of the things that also attracted me to auto racing. What I am doing is trying to get my equipment into optimal shape and configuration so that when I do step up to perform the only excuse left is that my technique has a deficiency. It manifests itself in other ways as well; I clean my heads between every round, for instance. I told myself no new irons until I play a full season and also break 100 with my clubs from 1999. I've completed both of those so it's time for my iron fitting so I've been doing my research.

For the shaft thing:
I was on the Ping G425 product page and they have a listing of all their available shafts for fitting. So I went to the wedge pages and looked up the same. I also called Ping to confirm that a few other shafts (and grips) could be custom ordered even though they were not on the website. I pulled the data onto my own spreadsheet:

Image

Then I added my current shaft at the bottom after I found the specs for my 1999 clubs in a 2007 forum post so I could compare the weight to the current offerings. Assuming I stick with a stiff shaft, which is correct for my driver swing speed of 101mph, I can compare them straight up on weight.

The column on the right is the launch trajectory. I want a mid to mid-high shaft. So that excludes the low shafts. I also want a shaft that is lighter than my current set. Not so much for faster swing speed, but I like the feeling of the weight being in the head of a club. Graphite shafts are going to be way too light so those ones are out. And I'm only interested in shafts that are available in both G425 iron and Glide 3.0 wedge. So I went ahead and bolded the 'qualifying shafts' on my spreadsheet.
Next, I did a quick google search on each qualifying shaft model to get an idea of what people were saying about them. When I searched out the 'Ping AWT 2.0' shaft I ended up in a thread on GolfWRX that talked about the progressive weighting, which is where I found that graphic. Finally, I came here to ask real people what they think because the GolfWRX crowd is more tightly wound than me, which is saying a lot.

Now when I go for my fitting, I can take his recommendations and cross-reference them to my chart and the shafts I'm already leaning towards. I want to be able to intelligently assess his recommendations against my preferences. This knowledge gathering is just my way of trying to keep up with his specialized expertise so I can end up with something that I want that also is correct for my swing.

I've done a similar analysis with other aspects of the clubs, like my grip spec: Arccos/Golf Pride Lite 360 Tour Velvet; Gold +1/32" with six wraps of tape. For that one, I had to dig and actually find out the thickness of the tape Ping uses in constructing clubs so I could end up with a jumbo/oversize Tour Velvet with an Arccos cavity since they don't make anything larger than a midsize. I'm actually pretty proud of putting that one together.

one of the courses I play at has implemented a tee time third party app that charges a convenience for booking tee times. What the **** ****

Is it run by Ticketmaster?

I went to my league tonight and had my fitter put together a 7i with that AWT shaft so I could hit a few. It was predictably longer than my current 7i. I flushed one dead center and it came out hot to 185 yards. My current 7i averages 140. Not useful, just funny. That's why I am going with forged wedges instead of set matched, to avoid those fliers.

In all seriousness, the demo 7i was 15 yards farther than my 6i with the same loft and with better dispersion. Good stuff.

Played on a simulator for the first time yesterday. Went to that five iron golf place downtown.

Setting to auto-putt seems like a no-brainer. Definitely a ton of fun, would do again. But, whether or not your chip would roll out or not seemed arbitrary, I think maybe the spin it picked up was too sensitive. Also, the distances on short irons seemed off. Basically 8i and up were all about 20 yards shorter than normal. Just couldn't get the distances to reconcile. Driver, and long irons all tracked with what I normally do. But approach shots were all f'd. Like full PW going sub-100 and 50 degree not getting 80 yards.

I think that is because if you hit behind the ball at all you lose energy but not swing path. So they lose 20% of the distance but still strike true. On turf you transfer more energy to the ball because then turf gives.

So you think hitting the mat absorbs energy and slows the club head down, when on grass it would just swing through?

dammit. I had planned to go to next years British Open at St. Andrews since this June. If you werent following the ticketing, they went to a ballot system, sort of like the Masters. I didn’t get picked

There will be a secondary market to sell at face value so hopefully I can snag one there but I’m already a little frustrated

Ever looked into playing it? I was just on the St. Andrews website yesterday looking at how to play the Old Course. They have a package where you play the Old Course and then two of the other courses over three days. But they don't book singles because of COVID. I'll either wait it out until that's lifted or see if I can find someone that wants to pair up. I'll keep you in mind as you seem to be up for adventures like that.

yeah. I absoultely want to play it at some point. That, TPC Sawgrass and Pebble Beach are on my bucket list to play. I want to try to get as close to single digit handicap as possible though

I do have a plan to play Pebble for my 35th birthday (will be in 2026). I was there for the US Open in 2019 and the course was more breathtaking in person than it was on tv. golf heaven
