Liked Fowler for a while but one thing does bug me - he’s played 5 holes at Shinnecock this week and they were today in a miserable shower and fog. He was here a couple of weeks ago to do a bit of intel and he and Phil have practiced offsite all week. Phil has only been to Shinnecock for his press conference this week. Interesting strategy. My backup pick is Day.

As for the course, it’s no joke. Miss the fairway, you have thick rough to hit out of. And the rain today will make it a bit tougher. Miss the green in the wrong place and you will be hitting a 20-yd wedge shot up a slope. I’d think a winning score of -3 or 4 will get it done. Weather Thursday thru Saturday supposed to be real good but the wind will likely be going about 10-15. This isn’t gonna be the shootout Erin Hills was last year.

He's +13 now, only three strokes behind Jason Day and Rory McIlroy, who are professional golfers.

It is a windy day today, and Shinnecock is showing some serious teeth. Sucks that Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, and Phil Mickelson are probably already out of contention.

A nice 1-under 69 for Ian Poulter to tie for the early clubhouse lead. And he can hardly contain his excitement . #USOpen

That wind was no joke today. I stood on 12 tee and watched Matt Kuchar hit a ball that started right and took a hard right turn thanks to the wind and it 1-hopped the fence for a ground-rule double. But yet, every player who talked to the media afterwards praised the USGA for the setup and that it was fair. Some said there were questionable pins in a couple places but there were still good scores out there.

The wind isn’t supposed to be as fierce on Friday but it will still be blowing.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, there's not much the USGA can do about a really gusty day in the middle of June. Rest of the weekend should be fantastic. Will be a bit of a scorcher on Sunday, so they'll be sweating more than usual.

Dustin Johnson is **** good. Tiger looking much better today but he needs to start scoring if he wants any chance of making the cut.

Shad, is that you? Tiger hits fairway on 1 again today and wipes it into the tall stuff and makes double after bogeying 18. He’s +5 on 1 and +3 on 14 in the first 2 rounds.

This could be recency bias, but it seems like there have been a lot of majors lately where there are a bunch of guys clustered closely, and then one golfer seems to run away with the tournament. Setting aside the jinx nonsense, this is starting to look that way.

I got to hear Joe Bucks and the announcers reactions before I saw the replay of what happened. I was expecting phil to have exposed himself or something after missing
