my best round ever was at conleys. it will always hold a special place in my heart, but really is an overpriced abomination as of late. after their fire, they were charging 100/round
check GolfNow. They were listing rounds for 32-50.

Had the privilege to play St. Andrews today. Parred the first 2 holes, birdied 5 & 15, and had a very adventurous bogey on 18 that all added up to a 97. Yes, there was a ton of carnage in between. For the TL;DR crowd, that’s the summary. For those who care about hole-by-hole, hit the spoiler button.
Conditions - low 70s and sunny. Winds were about 10-15 left to right going out and right to left coming in.

1 - 3 wood way left into 18 fairway where I nearly got brained by a tee shot. Hit a 7 iron from 157 to 40 feet and 2-putted for par.
2 - Driver left rough, 9 iron from 140 to 30 feet and 2-putted for par.
3 - Driver right into gorse, unplayable...wedged right of the green, pitched to 20 feet, 2-putted for double.
4 - Driver left into Cottage bunker. Had 110 in and fatted a wedge short. Then pitched too much thru green. Pitched again to 20 ft, 2-putt double.
5 - Driver down right side of fairway. Had 190 in and hit 6-iron hole high but right of green. Pitched to 6 ft, made birdie.
6 - Stupidly took 4-iron and fatted it into gorse for an unplayable. The rest was a snarly blur for a triple.
7 - Driver ugly to the left. Hit 7-iron from 175 that went in Shell bunker. Wedged out to 75 ft, 2-putt bogey
8 - Wedge from 140 way short, pitched 14 ft by, 2-putted for bogey
9 - Yanked driver left into gorse for unplayable, sliced a 6-iron into Boase’s bunker, exploded out short, ended up with a triple for 47 on front
10 - Driver way right but found it, hit directly into sun to 12 feet...to the 8th hole - 8 and 10 share a green. So I had about 100 feet for birdie and got down in 2 for par
11 - 4 iron into wind from 165 that looked real good but but ran thru the green into a big depression. Decided to bump into hill, didn’t work. Then putted with a 5-wood and ran it 20 yards off front of green. Made 6 and had steam coming out of the ears.
12 - Driver left into gorse. Drop and wedged to 60 ft where I 3-putted for double
13 - Driver in right rough, 6 iron from 180 long and left, pitch to 10 ft, 2-putt bogey
14 - Driver right rough, 5 wood yanked way left near gorse, stupidly tried to mash it thru the gorse and it laughed at me and kept it. Made triple
15 - Best drive of day - 287 down middle, wedged from 127 to 20 ft and drilled the birdie. I’ll remember that one for a while
16 - Driver way left, a pair of chunked shots followed by icing the puck across the green, made 8
17 - Road hole...kept it left and away from the hotel, chunked a 4-iron, hit wedge to lower ridge of green and 2-putted for bogey
18 - Driver right off a car in town for OB. Driver right off a building in town for OB. Total shanked driver into burn. Drop and hit 4-iron across cart path, staring at 10 easily. As I walk over Swilkan Bridge, find 2nd ball in fairway and hit short of Valley of Sin. As I keep walking, 2 guys in town yell at me that my FIRST ball is in play...up against a fence post. I nudge it out with the toe of my putter to the cart path, take the drop, and wedge to 90 ft. With a couple dozen people watching, I lag the par putt to 3 feet and make bogey. 50 on back, 97 overall.

That's an awesome post OP... Thanks for sharing with the group here. My favorite part of that whole round are the two Scots in town yelling that your ball is in play

You're a lucky, lucky man.

Open ended question: how many of you have played a “dream” course and actually played as well as you have hoped.

I played pebble about 9 years ago and had an up and down round. A lot of gr8 memories, including coming within inches of holing out from the sand on 16, but imo I was so geared up and mangled some shots that I should have made.

The second time I played Sawgrass, I played as well as I could have hoped for 16 of the 18 holes. I birdied 17 and then made a 9 on 18. OK, no big deal, go get the front side. I birdied 2 and was going along great, nearly acing #8. Then I got to #9 and got beaten to shreds by Pete Dye's redesign and made 10. What should have been a round of like 82, 83 turned out to be 90. But I'll always have that birdie on 17.

Harold Varner is my new favorite golfer.
It's nice seeing him string together some solid finishes. Black golfers finding success is only a good thing.

just wondering what clubs you guys keep in the bag. I know by the rules only 14 clubs are allowed. last night while cleaning my clubs I started to look at what I have and I'm thinking that I've got a few clubs that seem redundant and maybe I should take them out in favor of an extra wedge or maybe a different iron. keep in mind that I'm still a beginner and learning what I can hit where and how far.
here's what's in my bag:
driver
3w (I hardly ever use this one. I think because I have problems getting good loft with it anywhere that's not on a tee)
5w
7w
4 hybrid
4i
6i
7i
8i
9i
PW
58 degree wedge (I use this one for around the greens)
C3i wedge for the sand (worth every penny I paid for it. not afraid of the bunkers anymore even if it does feel like a bit of a cheat)
putter

looking at my bag last night I was wondering if I've got too many woods and also wondering if it made sense to carry both the 4 hybrid and 4 iron.

right now I'm mostly playing executive length courses and occasionally full length courses.

Woods:
TaylorMade M2d driver
TaylorMade Burner Rescue 3W

Irons:
*Hogan 3I
Cobra S2 4-GW
Callaway 56 wedge

Putter:
Knockoff Odyssey Rossie putter
*TaylorMade Ghost Daddy Long Legs

* - optional. These are clubs that I occasionally throw in the bag.

My irons never came with a 3, so I threw in my old three. If we're doing the Tuesday golf league, I typically won't carry it since there's not many situations that call for it. I bought the TaylorMade putter at a show this summer and never really seemed to get a good feel to it. Played it for about a month or so and could never really feel the ball as I was putting it, so it was going everywhere except in the hole. If I'm out by myself or in a group that's not really concerned about their score, I'll take it with me. Is it good to be switching back and forth on putters like that? Eh, probably not. Would probably also explain why my putting has been garbage this year.

Just noticed that you don't have a 5i listed. Any reason or just one of those clubs that never played well?

WITB LITT Edition:

SLDR Driver
Burner 5W
Cleveland 1H - 14*; plays about 240-250 off the deck
Cleveland 4-SW
56* CG14
60* CG14
Odyssey SABERTOOTH

Woods:
Cobra King LTD Driver
Cobra King LTD 3 Wood
Cobra King F6 Baffler 5 Wood

Irons:
Cobra King F8 One Length 4 Hybrid
Cobra King F7 One Length 5I-GW
Callaway MD3 54 Wedge
Callaway MD3 58 Wedge*
Callaway Sure Out 64 Wedge*

Putter:
Odyssey White Hot Pro 2.0 #1

The Sure Out wedge only makes it into my bad if I'm playing somewhere with a lot of sand, replacing the 58 degree. The recent switch to One Lengths has been a major boost to my game and I don't see myself going back to my Callaway Steelhead XRs. Now if I could only putt worth a damn.

Driver: Bio Cell (silver)
3 & 5 wood, 4-PW all some clone club company that made them look like Ping Rapture clubs ($100 ~12 years ago... not too shabby)
SW, AW, LW set from Pinemeadow golf
Putter... some weird thing I bought on woot years ago

Driver - Callaway Epic
3 Wood - TaylorMade SLDR
3 hybrid, 4-PW - Nike Mach speed, 6 years old but I hit them great still and don't want to replace just for something new
50, 56, 60 - Cleveland wedges
Putter - Odyssey Rossie Mallet (model 2.0 I think?)

I've really been getting better with my long irons, and it's making me debate replacing the 3h with a 2h or 5 wood or something like that now that I can get the 4i over 200

Driver: Ping G, 10.5*
3 wood: Taylormade RBZ Stage 2, 15*
5 wood: Taylormade RBZ Stage 2, 19*
Hybrid: Cobra F7, adjustable set at 21.5*
4i-PW: Cobra SZ irons 2009
54*, 58* Slazenger Crown Limited wedges
60* Ping wedge
Ping Zing USA Anser putter

I'm currently one club over the limit. Thinking of moving one of the woods out (I can adjust the hybrid to match the 5 wood loft) and getting better wedge gapping.

I am a bogey golfer.

For a while now I have only been using odd numbered irons
Driver
3 i
5 i
7 i
9 I

Plus a random 7 wood that I use once every three rounds because its such a quirky club

my theory is that I'm not good enough to consistently hit any club any distance, so you might as well simplify your decision making process. If its between a 7 and 8, i just have no choice to use the 7. but lets face it, the variance on my 7 is 20 yards. i have many wedges in the bag...50, 56, 52, and 60, but i only use one of those to chip. the less decision making the better.

Hence the "need better wedge gapping" remark.

The wedges are the only things I haven't touched since I bought my first adult-sized set and "borrowed" them from my dad's old set.
