You should see what they get at the John Deere.
I think there might be one out in Vegas or something like that, but I think there should be more places that are giant adult sandboxes where you can rent a bulldozer, backhoe, front loader, or the like and just drive it around and dig in the dirt. I'd go to one.
I would love to take my daughter here this summer.

Also, imagine being a world famous celebrity, one of the top athletes (certainly in your sport) in history, having wealth beyond measure, and you get yourself in a single-vehicle car accident with injuries so severe the first responders determine you need treatment at a Level 1 trauma center....... and the closest one to the scene is Harbor-UCLA. The main reason Harbor became a Level trauma center is because they used to get hundreds of gunshot injuries a year. It is an absolute pit.

It also has a posh name so people not familiar with LA will think it is a fancy pants place.

No matter how much money I had, I would rather drive than be driven. Sure, if you have money you can afford to not drive, but I'm much more comfortable and happy when I'm in control of the driving.

Lest anyone think Wilbon had a reasonable take on this, his first instinct was to compare it to Kobe.

Anyone have a golf instructor, that offers instruction to the public, that they like in Westmoreland county? I haven't played in years, and when I did I never broke 100 because I never learned the fundamentals aside from reading books. Books make it seem easy.

I want to find someone that can teach me swing fundamentals this spring and then let me hack around all summer/fall. Then regroup next year and dig a little deeper.

Rick Gay at Totteridge is close, but I don't know anything about him. It seems like golf is an industry that still skews old as I can find more online information about private pilot instructors in Westmoreland county than I can golf instructors.

Most trauma centers may be pits, but Harbor-UCLA really stands out. I remember a few years ago they had an incident where a Dr sewed up an entire gauze roll inside a patient when they closed them up after a surgical procedure, so that's fun.

In Los Angeles, we have:

Cedars-Sinai, which is in Beverly Hills (or at least in the neighborhood)
Reagan-UCLA, which is in Westwood less than 2 miles from the Playboy Mansion (and where I've been treated myself)

Very much un-pit locations.

Thanks for the Mt. Odin tip, will give them a call this week I think.

I mentioned that I haven't golfed for real in about 7 years, and my gear was used/old back then and hasn't gotten any younger. This is my bag:

D: Ping G20
5w: 25+ year old nameless thing I always hit pretty okay.
21° Trouble club
3i-9i-SW-PW: Ping i3
60°Lob
Putter: Ping

I'm not sure if my renewed interest in golf will take so I'm not really looking to replace everything this year. The gear isn't the reason I suck. ;)
I am going to replace a few pieces, namely the 5w and maybe some of the long irons. I'm curious what that end of the bag even looks like anymore. I clearly never bought into the hybrid woods developments, and I'm not sure anyone carries a 3 iron in their bag anymore.

At one time I used to carry D, 3w, 5w, T.

If I'm only married to the D, T, and 4i+ clubs, what should I shop for? Traditional 3w/5w? Some kind of hybrids? Do I keep the 3i and only buy one wood/hybrid?

A 21° trouble club will take the spot of a 3i/hybrid so I think you can count the 3i out.

5 wood or 3 wood depends on how you plan on using it imo. 5 wood would be easier to hit off the deck than a 3 wood (due to loft), but a 3 wood is a better option off the tee.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I always struck the 4i very well and thus never used the 3i, the fact that it overlaps the 21° club is great information because that makes the 3i even less useful.

The trouble club is a bastard orphan of a thing that I bought from the lost and found of a golf course going out of business. It's very forgiving so I've held onto it all this time.

I've always favored the 5w over the 3w. When the 3w broke I never replaced it. The only time I used the 3w was off the tee when I was having a particularly awful day with the driver, but I'm hoping the lessons cure me of that tendency and the associated apprehension.

I'd almost recommend keeping a 5 wood in the bag over a 3w if you haven't played in 7 years. Much easier to hit off the fairway. A lot of amateurs hit the 5w further with the increased loft

You think a 4w would be a worthy compromise or is that being too cute? I ask because I'm going to pick up a G20 to match the driver, and for some reason, there are more 4w than 3w or 5w on the market.

i've never seen or hit a 4w but I would imagine that would still be in the spirit of my post and be a little bit of a compromise

I don’t mean this in a rude way but the clubs you carry are so much less important than your ability to swing a club when you’re first getting into it

I guess it doesn't matter. Since I'm already replacing the 5w and the 21 moves to cover the 3i the bag has room for both. It would look like this:

D, 3w, 5w, 21h
4i-9i-PW-SW
60
P

If I wanted to get cute with it I guess I could do:

D, 4w, 21h, 27h
4i-9i-PW-SW
60
P

And use the 27h as an iron alternative in the rough for moderate distances. That's probably overthinking and needless spending, though.

And yeah, MiMH, I agree. Like I said the gear isn't the reason I'm not consistent. But I'm going to buy a new wood anyway so I don't mind thinking through it to find out which one.

I'm always fussy about gear, probably a racer thing. Thanks for the help!

i'd go with the latter. I play a lot and don't hit my fairway woods a whole ton. You'd get more use out of extra hybrids than an extra fairway wood imo

Yeah I have a 3 and 5, and aside from using the 3 off the tee occasionally (15°), I dont really use either. I'm much more comfortable smacking my 3H around (set to 19.5°, which is the same as my 5w).

But, it is also really based on personal preference. A hybrid is easier to hit based on the tech involved but if you hit a wood better than a hybrid, you might be fine with the wood. Would suggest at least re-trying a hybrid after you get a couple lessons under your belt
