I full endorse the toughness of the US Open, but if the greens are *that* ridiculous, i think it takes away from the enjoyment. We shall see though

Those clowns from No Laying Up are jackasses and dadholes...but that tweet isn’t wrong.

Good scoring early but conditions are pretty perfect. That breeze will be coming soon.

the recliner sofa that we bought 6 weeks ago finally arrived last night so this will be how I spend this weekend watching golf:

really enjoying the precision so far, especially around the greens.

Apparently Fatrick Reed made a one hop ace on 7 and absolutely no one reacted to it.

Can you imagine how hated you'd have to be to make an ace and not have one single person around you be excited/happy about it?

I believe they were referring to his playing partner/any grounds crew or volunteers.

You can hear a woo or two, I'm guessing from people down by the green, but just look at the body language of the guy he's playing with and that guy's caddie.

7 is a type of green where if you’re not standing right next to it, you won’t see anything near the hole. Only people who would have whooped would have been the cameraman and the shotlink volunteers. Hideki is a bit of a statue anyway. I think Spieth gave him an acknowledgement.

It does suck to lose the ‘no hole in one’ bet less than 3 hours into the event.

speaking of shotlink volunteers, heres a snapshot of my green grid from volunteering at oakmont in '16. this is of 12 green. great experience. on saturday, my partner got sick so i had to run the triangulation machine and the manual tracking sheet. i was an animal. DJ couldnt have done it without me

I promise you that was Winged Foot today and not Erin Hills. Greens were still soft (rev up that subair system, boys!) and there was very little breeze so if you hit the fairways today, you could really attack. Various stream-of-consciousness notes from the day:

--There were 21 under-par rounds on Thursday. In 2006, there were 12 under-par rounds TOTAL
--Phil Mickelson was not one of those under-par rounds...far from it. But he did birdie the first two holes. So that makes his 79 even tougher to imagine. He hit just 2 of 14 fairways. If he WD's now, he can NetJet across the country in time to tee off at Pebble Beach in the first round of the Champions Tour event on Friday.
--Tiger continued his recent trend of starting strong in a round and then tailing off. 17 and 18 haven't been a picnic for anyone but when he rolled in that 40-footer on 16, I'm sure his fans were thinking if he could get it to the house at E, he'd be in decent shape.
--Justin Thomas, playing alongside Tiger, had very little trouble navigating the morning. I thought his putting might not be there but when you're hitting it as close as he was, maybe you don't need to have your best putter.
--Will Zalatoris may not even make the cut but he did nearly walk away with 2 aces on the day. He got a 1 at the 7th and then rattled the stick and the hole at 13. On the day, his scores on the par 3's were 1-2-3-4.
--Spanish amateur Eduard Rosaud holed out his 2nd shot of the day for eagle at 1. By the time he teed it up on 5, he was +2.
--Jordan Spieth...bogeys the first...loses a ball off the tee and doubles the 2nd. So he's already +3 thru 2. Then he birdies the next 3 to get it all back. In US Opens, sitting at E after a +3 start is incredibly encouraging. Then he got to the back 9 and made a mess. Oh and he did Phil one better by only hitting 3 fairways all day.
--Most interesting thing I saw today was on the 2nd hole. Matt Wolff's 2nd shot hit behind the hole and clanked off Rickie Fowler's which was sitting at about 3 feet. Normally, there would be marshals or a crowd around that could direct Rickie where to put his ball. If he had looked my way, I could have helped him but instead, he had to elicit Phil Mickelson's help. Phil was in the group ahead but 3 tee is right next to 2 green and there was a wait at the time. It's just another hidden effect of lack of crowds.

Friday's forecast is high 60's with winds a steady 12-15mph so I'd expect a little bit more difficulty.

Sure was. My only pick that is looking disastrous is Morikawa.

Rough days for sure but I wouldn't call them brutal since they all made the cut and JT still has a very good opportunity to win.

Day 2 notes:

--You wanna know who had brutal days? When Shaun Norris walked off the 16 green yesterday, he was -3 and 2 back. He bogeyed the final 2 holes and then slammed the trunk with a 79 today. Norris is a big, burly South African who is one of the last players you'll see on this gym-infatuated game who openly puffs on heaters. Who else...how about Jordan Spieth? Remember when he was relevant? He busts out a birdie-free 81 and looked as forlorn and lost as ever as I watched him walk from the clubhouse to the parking lot. But the worst of all may have been J.T. Poston. Last year's Wyndham winner opened with a 71. Thursday on the range after his 71, a stone or pebble came up in a divot and hit him square in the left eye. He saw a specialist and played his second round but couldn't see more than 2 feet with his left eye. A closing birdie is all the red the Postman could deliver in his 82.
--Bryson may prove my naysaying wrong with his strategy and if so, he'll meet the standards of passing the examination of his game. He hasn't made any big mistakes as of yet, which is remarkable given that he's only hit half the fairways.
--Everyone ready for that very likeable final pairing of Reed & DeChambeau?
--At least I was right about Tiger & Phil. See ya, gents. Perhaps Tiger can caddy for Charlie this weekend and be on the winning side.
--Rory. I've never seen some of the things I saw out of him today. It's almost like after he striped his tee shot on 2 after an opening birdie that he took some sort of crazy pill that turned him into a 10 handicap. I watched him get a shitty break on 2 when he pushed his 2nd shot that hit a drain cover and kicked hard right but into a tight mown area by 3 tee. He failed to get up and down. Then he hits a line drive off the tee at 3 that had zero prayer of getting over the bunker. Made bogey there. On 7, it's 148 yards. He somehow came up 10 yards short of the green. On 10, it's 215 down the hill. He was at least 20 yards short of that green. Let's just hope that he couldn't figure out the wind because that was a putrid round of golf.
--Fun bit of trivia -- who was the last player to make a hole-in-one in a major and go on to win that major?
--3rd hole is so freakin hard. It's even harder when it's into the wind like it was today. 225 yards into a wind is pretty much impossible. That hole is so difficult that Billy Casper laid up on it all 4 days the year he won the Open here and he made par all 4 times. Today, I saw Danny Willett hit one 40 yards right. I watched Adam Scott hit it left of the Shotlink tower, which is at least 35 yards left of the green. These are Masters champions doing this, not Wednesday pro-am participants.
--Most interesting thing I saw today -- Well, I almost saw it. More like, I heard it. We were shooting video of Westwood and Bubba on 16 tee and as we walked back to 15 green to shoot Berger, we hear the flagstick clang. Someone had just slam-dunked one from the fairway. Turns out it was Matthew Fitzpatrick from about 140 yards out. I've only ever seen that happen once (was during Brandt Snedeker's 59 in Greensboro) and would have been cool to see again.

More of the same weather-wise for Saturday. High of 64, winds just as brisk as they were for Friday. Leading score might be -2 by sunset.

Played a 9 hole course on Kodiak Island (the only course on the island; the second biggest island in the US)

Honestly, a nice course given that they probably don’t have much infrastructure to deal with. Greens were much faster than I expected and the scenery was 10/10 (Kodiak Island itself is beautiful)

Albeit I was high on edibles, using rental clubs and didn’t have my spikes so it was purely for fun (I couldn’t for the life of me hit the stupid driver) but it was a really cool experience
