2022-23 Penn State Football Thread

Postby Orlando Penguin » Sat Aug 06, 2022 3:30 pm

Today was media day and we're 26 days from kickoff on a nice Thursday night in West Lafayette (because PSU always has to start the conference schedule on the road). The usual question marks with this group -- offensive line, in-game coaching -- along with how the defense under new coordinator Manny Diaz will adjust to new schemes as well as a much younger lineup. At least the secondary is somewhat experienced. There's a lot of front 7 turnover on the defensive side of the ball but also a lot of speed. Offensively, we get another year of Clifford and hopefully they can keep him healthy by not having him run all the damn time. Some great freshman RB's coming into the fold with Singleton and Allen. The WR corps gets a giant boost from WKU transfer Mitchell Tinsley, who is a roommate of Clifford's so I'd expect the majority of the targets to go his way. But with all that said, the season could be torpedoed in the first 3 weeks with the schedule being at Purdue, Ohio, at Auburn. They get all 3, great. If road woes arise and they drop both road games, then they're just playing for the Citrus Bowl again. With Franklin's track record, it's difficult to be encouraged about anything with this team because you just know there will be 1 or 2 games against obvious underdogs where they're going to spit the bit because of his poor preparation and gameday decisions.

I don't have any positive expectations this year. I am also not excited to have Clifford back. Nothing has shown me that the offensive line has improved which means more of the same from last year until he inevitably gets hurt. Hopefully Franklin has learned his lesson from the Indiana game and the backups will actually be prepared to play.

Yeah, I mean I haven't been this meh about a season in a long time. We are widely predicted to finish Top 20 (yeah, I know....) and have a highly rated class as usual, just Franklin's ability to not meet expectations puts a damper on everything.

Purdue's improved and Auburn of course is very good, drop both of those on the road and as OP said, Citrus Bowl or bust.

Hope they surprise me, it's my son's first year with student season tix and it would be great for him to see them have a good campaign.

I’ll try to get Ohio state tickets through work. Other than that, I’m not sure I could be less interested.

Game day! Been a long time since there's been so little excitement for a PSU season. Justifiably so after the last couple.

But, hope springs eternal. Go get 'em Lions.

I expect nothing, so anything good will be a pleasant surprise.

We're having a tailgate at lunch time at work today. Everyone else seems excited and optimistic about the season.

7-5 is my guess. I would go as high as 10-2 with an L at the big house and one other random L and a big upset of OSU at home.

My only expectations for this season are that they'll lose a game to a team that they shouldn't because of poor preparation and/or a bad in-game decision by Franklin. I put the over/under on number of times I tweet about 'remember, they spent $75 million on this' at 4 1/2. Hell, the first one might even be tonight.

Should have been a pick 6. Instead we’re down 3-0.

Cornerbacks can’t catch… WRs can’t catch. No one can catch.

I’ve seen a lot of bad targeting calls, but that might be one of the worst I’ve seen.

That Pitt targeting was worse than the PSU one. And they made the right call there.
