MTOP: would you see/have you seen an opera?

Postby tifosi77 » Mon Mar 06, 2023 3:46 pm

The location where it is performed has nothing at all to do with the differentiation between a musical and an opera. The only reason I called out the setting of Phantom was because I presumed PB's question arose from the fact that 'opera' is in the title of the work.

I was thinking about this over the weekend, and I agree with nocera's characterization. In a musical, music supports the words (be they lyrics or dialogue); in an opera the words are the vehicle of the music.
An opera is fully composed and all words are sung, while a musical is basically a mix of dialogue and song. The Barber of Sevilla is an opera, no matter where it's performed.
Les Miz is a musical no matter where it's performed, and it is through-sung. ;)

Have I seen one? No

Would I see one? I don't think I would seek one out on my own. But if somebody wanted to see one and needed a second person to go with them, I'd at least be open to checking it out.

I've seen many musicals, but never an opera. I would go see one, but frankly I'd rather stick to lyrics I can understand.

Eric Serra is one of my favorite film composers. He had never worked with an opera singer before this movie, and when he wrote the Plavalugna scene he thought nearly half of it would be technically impossible for a person to actually sing, that they'd have to pull off much of the piece via trickery. On the day, the singer (an eastern European woman, as I recall) showed up and as she was taking her coat off, getting a drink, etc, she was just sort of casually humming the full piece from her memory of the sheet music. Serra was like, "Whoa, wait a sec....", and she was all "Right, let's get to work", at which point she promptly sang the whole f**king thing live. They ended up tweaking a very few bits here and there - things like smoothing out breaths, or flattening a couple transitions - with the goal of making it sound a bit more 'alien'. But nearly the whole thing as it is heard in the final is just that woman singing.

25 years after that movie came out, I still sort of can't believe it.

I started tipping during Covid lockdowns. Just kind of kept doing it since.

Yes, but less than during the pandemic. I've also become particularly annoyed at places that start with the highest suggested percentage first. 25% tip for takeout? **** you. The place we got tonight had tipping options in the following order: 25%, 20%, 15%, 18%. Are you trying to **** hide the 15%? Now I'm selecting Custom and rounding down.

Hmm, I did a lot more during the pandemic.

Now, not as much. You can forget it if you charge me 4% to use a credit card.

The suggested tips always include sales tax, which is bullshit. I'm not tipping you for the government skim amount.
