I’ve seen a couple, and is there a between in seeing more? I’m not going out of my way to see one. Musical? Yes. Opera? Meh… I’d go, but it would require zero effort on my part.

I had a weekend in Park City about 10 years ago where I went skiing, saw 2 movies at Sundance, and attended an opera. It was different for sure as everything was in Italian and fortunately there were monitors with subtitles in order to follow along with the story. I'd see another one but it would have to be a famous one. I don't even remember the name of the one I saw. But I do give a ton of credit to the performers.
Also almost got into a bar fight in that same weekend but that's another story.

My wife went to the Met ten years ago to see Romeo and Juliet, the opera. I enjoyed cosplaying as a rich person at the time. That said, after 3+ hours I was bored senseless. In hindsight I probably should have picked one I didn't know going in.

I went for a freshman orientation thing in college. I snuck booze in and fell asleep. It sucked. I like other shows

Is Phantom of the Opera considered an Opera or a musical?

It's a musical. "Opera" is the setting (Paris Opera House). Is Phantom of the Opera considered an Opera or a musical?

Phantom Of the Opera is definitely a musical and not an opera but it’s a good thought experiment because there isn’t any technical differentiator between the two. I guess tif’s answer is mostly right but does that mean if someone performs the Barber of Seville in a park amphitheater it’s no longer an opera?
I would say opera’s are generally in a foreign language (specifically european) but obviously that’s a flawed definition as well

If we consider musicals to be operas then I have seen a few. Little Shop of Horrors was actually super cool seeing it done on stage.

An opera is fully composed and all words are sung, while a musical is basically a mix of dialogue and song. The Barber of Sevilla is an opera, no matter where it's performed.

We don’t but I can’t really articulate why in a scientific way

An opera is all about the music. A musical’s story is reliant on the words. I’m sure there are other more technical things that separate them, but in my opinion that’s the biggest.
That’s why you can watch an opera in a foreign language and still can follow the story to a certain degree (as long as you know the gist).
