We talking butter knives here? Or like kitchen knives?
Butter knives go in blade up for cleanliness, anyone that's cutting themselves on a butter knife deserve it. Any actually sharp knives are washed by hand.

I don’t think our knives would even fit blade up. The handle of the knives is thicker than that of the forks and spoons.

We only put butter knives in the dishwasher and they go blade up. All other knives get hand washed.

We did. I still don't understand the "cleaner" take with blades up. The entire inside contents of the dishwasher is cleaned. It's not like the water/soap doesn't go beneath the tray. As a matter of fact, the water jets are below so better chance your silverware is more clean with dirty side down.Didn't we have this same discussion like 6 months ago?

You serious? Blade down. Not only for personal safety but because my doggos enjoy licking the dishes as they get loaded, and while it is discouraged there is the possibility they could lick a knife resulting in dog tongue for a midnight schnack.

The dirty parts (heh) of utensils go up, to get maximum exposure to the jets. The basket handle forms a bit of a protective shield and imposed a more circumspect approach to unloading; also mitigates danger in case I become a toddler again and I get all grabasstic and reach for the knives willy nilly. Generally, since both of us are grown ass adults, this safety concern, isn't.

We have a few steak knives that won't fit blade up, so they all go in blade down. I hadn't really thought about how weird that is.

This. Everybody in the house is old enough now not to hurt themselves, but dog tongue is not a delicacy I intend to try.You serious? Blade down. The blade was forged in 2k° heat...... the plastic or wooden handle, not so much.
Detergents used in dishwashers are very abrasive (by design) and can chip the edge. Same with blades placed in such a way that they might come in contact with other items or even the frame of the shelf drawer; but it's not just about protecting the knife, it's also about protecting other things from the knife. You can end up with rust, pitting, and other defects.
It's just a really poor idea to put a chef's knife type thing in a dishwasher.

Butter knives... Dishwasher "blade" up.
Nice knives... Hand wash and shake off, towel dry and promptly return to block.
