DK and Pirates media was mostly insufferable yesterday about the Hayes signing. I hope he fulfills even half the contract not on IR most of the time.

I think you're severely overstating what an average of $8.5M a year pays for these days

No, it's chump change - and his injury history is already something to be concerned about. It's very low-risk, but I've already heard from Pittsburgh media how much of a big deal this is. So he should play like a big deal if they're gonna be douchers about it.

There was a good reply to the tweet about the signing:

That still doesn't benefit the Pirates imo. The contract is so long, they can be successful and go back to "rebuilding" before his contract is up, and he'd get traded either way.

The lengths people go to justify not spending money for the Pirates is absurd to me. Like he signed a deal, but it's not the player's fault if he goes to ARB and gets big money. It's the fault of the team for not spending money if they went that latter route.

The point of that tweet, and the point that I'm making, is that it's a fair deal. Nobody robbed anybody on the deal. It's extreme in that Hayes is so young and that this is the biggest deal the Pirates have ever done.

Yea, I think it's a fair deal, and not outstanding either way imo. Seems as if Hayes didn't want to gamble on himself, and that's OK. He's making a comfortable living, and potentially leaving money on the table if he booms, but protects himself from a bust.

At the end of the day though, had the Pirates not done it and he booms, he's another player in a long line of players that was moved with a year remaining on his deal or whatever.

Nobody knows what money the players will be making in 5-6 years, but per that tweet, he's betting that he'd be no better than a $25m player in his free agent years. In today's dollars, that's top 20 in the league.

Either way, even if he is a top 20 player in the league by then, you think the Pirates will be paying for it?

Exit velocity off the bat.

Meaning, he absolutely crushed a line drive. The highest last year was 122 (Giancarlo Stanton).

21 years later and they haven't found a team to play in it.

I have been to maybe 5 Pirates games, but that was one of them. The Sprint rep hooked us up with tickets when I worked at Radioshack.

Through two games, starting pitchers for your pittsburgh pirates have thrown 7 innings, given up 8 earned runs, and thrown 68+70 (138) pitches. That is 19 pitches per inning.

They managed to get the Cards starter to throw 41 pitches in the first, but only scored one run. That's an achievement.

One might say it's hard to get Cardinals out than it is throwing an impressive bullpen session on the Twitter
