Just got a call on my cell phone from my Amazon Echo at home. My daughter apparently figured out how to use Alexa to make phone calls... nice.

Less than one month in, and my daughter has already brought home two separate fundraiser sheets and a Scholastic book club form. Hard pass on the fundraiser stuff, but the prices on books via Scholastic are crazy cheap, so I bought a whole bunch. I compared it to Amazon and eBay, and they're more than 50% cheaper.

Well, it hasn't been a good start to the school year. My daughter has apparently gotten into the habit of hitting and kicking other kids, something she never previously did. And yesterday, she was sent to the principal's office after she jabbed another student in the palm with her pencil. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that the stress from all of this is taking years off my life.

Some of you have kids in karate, no? If you don't mind me asking, was it because of or did it help with aggression and/or anger issues?

My kid didn't have much interest in playing sports and we saw a flyer about a little tigers program through the ATA school. 1 lesson and he was hooked. He never had any anger or aggression problems, but he was very shy. I'm amazed at what7 months of class has done to him. He is now the leader of his class and gets up in front of the other kids to help them and speak to them. There are some nightmare kids in his class, but he has never broken and buys in 100% and I can't tell you how impressed I am with some of the changes. Excellent leadership, confidence and discipline building. It also doesn't hurt that he learns how to use nun-chuks. I will say, you get out what you put in. From my experience seeing some of the kids that goof off every class, they still goof off every class 6 month later and it doesn't appear to be much change.

my older son wants to quit basketball and join as well. Honestly, I'd rather all my kids do taekwando rather than some of the other sports they are playing. Even as an adult who recently started classes (holy **** is it tough trying to learn something completely new like this), the benefits that come from the class are pretty awesome.

Only negative thing I've found about it is money related. It can be a money trap, especially with the kids and all of their "animal print" belts, but right now the pros completely outweigh the cons so I'm happy to stick with it.

Ditto to Eddysnake.

My daughter who does it was shy (she is also tiny) and she has had real improvement in self-belief and it has helped her personality come out.

We are about two months into karate with mini-meow. When we signed up, we had to fill out a questionnaire on what we wanted to get out of the program and if we had an particular areas we wanted the coaches to work on. They had us rank 1-4 on the following areas: Exercise. Discipline. Attention. Self-Control. We had self-control as number one and the coach really works with mini-meow with it. There are about a dozen kids in the class and you can tell which parents want which traits to work on. She focuses on making the kids that need the exercise finish out drills hard and keep their feet moving. She makes the kids that need to work on attention hold their stances a few extra seconds. She works with mini-meow on keeping his eyes where they should be; whether on her or on his partner.

It is really amazing.

Thanks, eddy. The location I'm looking at does karate, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing and general self-defense. I guess the next step would be to giving them a call to describe the situation.

Plus with karate aren't you taught to not attack people, just defend yourself? Sounds like if she buys in enough to that lesson, at minimum it would curb the antics at school.

Also, hidden perk. When they put their gear on and start sparring, it is the most hilarious thing these eyes have ever seen.

My 6 yr olds first class had the teacher explain bullying and what to do on the playground/school if it happened. She went on to teach them how to defend themselves and attack back if attacked. She made it clear that they would probably get in trouble at school, but not at home with your parents. It was pretty awesome.

It's weird how different pregnancies are. My wife wasn't even 1 cm dilated the morning my daughter was born. She went from water broke and "barely a fingertip" dilated at 2 AM to fully dilated and baby coming out at 8 PM that day.

Dilation is not that important. The effacement percentage is the number you want to know.

Yea I know pregnancy is not imminent, it's just the fact that the process has kicked-off is more terrifying than anything.
