Peppa Pig Syndrome!!
American children are sounding more like Brits, thanks to a popular little pig. All of the characters in the British cartoon “Peppa Pig” have accents.

Now, some parents are noticing their kids are developing British accents from watching the show.

I don't recall getting off school the Friday before President's Day back in the day.

Discussion w Mrs. Franchise and little Franchise (age 11) yesterday:

Mrs F: Who is your favorite Shark?
Lil F: Laurie
Me (looking puzzled): There’s no shark named Laurie...
Mrs F: We are talking about Shark Tank
Me: Oh. Then who is your favorite San Jose Shark?
Lil F: Logan Couture

It is quite amazing how much the college application and admission process has changed in the last 20 or so years. My oldest daughter is a senior and has basically picked her school now, but getting to this point has sucked, with Clemson especially. She got accepted, with the condition that she’d have to start this summer. Had never heard of that. We checked on what the deal was. They said that the pool was very competitive this year, so out of state needed a 1350 on their SAT (she got a 1290). But that wasn’t accurate because two of her friends got in with 1250 and basically the same class rank. She also is classified as in state because I live in SC. We brought this up to the admissions office and they said they’d bring it to committee again in light of that fact that she’s in state. After a couple days they came back with the same deal. She wanted Clemson as an option, but not after all this.

That's disappointing. Could she take classes this summer at a technical college and transfer them in?

I was accepted to Clemson in 1992 with a 1120 on the SAT.

I forget, did you go to Clemson? I meant to ask you about this, because thought you might have some knowledge. She would have to take two classes at Clemson this summer and would have to live on campus. It comes across as a money grab. It’s not like she needs to take college prep classes, as she’s been in all honors and AP classes through high school. So it’s left a bad taste.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right to me either. As with most state colleges nationally, SC colleges and university state funding has dropped precipitously over the last few years, and these types of things help with budget shortfalls. I could see if she was a student athlete with borderline scores and grades, but she's right near the average normal acceptance. Clemson is getting very difficult to get into, and having a good football team doesn't help matters either.

They didn't do stuff like this back when I went there, but I can ask some recent grads about their experiences.

Another thing she could do: go somewhere else for a year and transfer in as a sophomore. Technical colleges - York Tech in your case - have agreements with all of the major colleges and universities that allows for most general education courses to transfer without any issues into the big state schools.

She probably has a bunch of college credits already (AP classes), but she could get ENG 101, math, public speaking, etc. all done and save you some money. Transfer in to Clemson, and get that Clemson diploma in three years.

Yeah, we had a kid go through the exact same thing with Clemson. So she said screw you and went to South Carolina.

Yeah, we thought about transferring in, but she wants to go to and not transfer. Clemson was a backup, but she wanted it as an option. She’s most likely going to go to TCU. She loved it there and got decent scholarship money.

Freddy, how does your kid like USC? We did a tour there as a field trip with my class this week. The campus is nice, but not a fan of Columbia.

We have two at South Carolina and they both love it, love the school and the campus, but the fact is it is in Columbia is not a plus for me.

We also have two at Winthrop, and they adore that place.

One kid at Clemson is a big fan, and he's in Ag.
When I say kid don't mean my own children. Talking about students who go to our church.

I was going to say your kids (I presumed) weren't old enough for college.

USC is trash. The Darla Moore Business School is excellent, and I've heard good things about the Honors College. But Columbia sucks, and the regular undergrad school sucks. I may be biased tho.

If you're looking for a small, private, liberal arts college in rural SC...I know a place. :pop:

I learned of needing to start in the summer from watching The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

So our daycare had to close early today, and since I have the more flexible employer, I had to leave work early and finish from home.

Back up, yesterday there was a water main (emphasis on MAIN - it was like a 36 inch line) which broke, leaving half of town without water - the half which daycare resides. So last night, the daycare coordinator posts a message that if water isn't restored by 6 am, they will have to close. 6 am comes, apparently they have 'water but it's brown'... they're going to open. So mrs mac drops baby mac off at 7:45. at like 8:30 the water goes off again (As they're repairing the line) and we have to come pick him up.

Probably sounding petty here but I surely hope I don't have to pay for the day.

Most daycares charge you even if you skip some days. We used to get one week's "vacation" when my daughter was in full-time daycare, but her before/after school care program doesn't do that. We get charged for every Monday regardless of whether or not she goes, or even if the school is closed.
