Ask him what he's more upset about... being made fun of or the fact that people didn't get in trouble for it

In the 3rd and 4th grade basketball league I’m coaching in, the worst offender has been a referee. He was arguing with the guy who runs our league about the rules before a game. Referee shoved the rules at the guy, who shows him in the rule book where the ref was wrong. Ref pushes coach.

Other than that, it’s been a fun league. I go by the same motto as CBear. I told the parents at the beginning of the season our goals are to have fun, learn the game, and be respectful. Also told them every kid would get a chance at point guard and we’ll try our best to get every kid a basket. Succeeded in all areas except the last where only 9/10 kids got a basket. Have one more game tomorrow in the championship for the kid to get his. He probably won’t but I can tell he’s still had fun and has learned a lot this season.

I actually did ask him that. I said it didn't make you feel good when someone made fun of you did it, that's why we don't do it. Thays when he said "well I got a red light for it, no one else did". Sort of rolled that into a life isn't fair lesson. But that is over the head of a 5 year old at that point.

The tough part was resisting the urge to tell him to tell the teacher to go f herself.

Meh. Sounds like he cares more about the fact that he was punished and others weren't so I'd basically stick with life's not always fair and focus on how you treat people

Tell him to ask her if she plans to wear her empty yellow seat costume to the Pitt games again next season.

Yeah but that's the thing.
They find things to punish him for daily.

From a teacher’s perspective… most don’t go out of the way to find things to punish a specific kid for. It’s usually warranted. That said, there are definitely some who don’t like certain kids and punish them, but it’s very rare in my experience.

I won't even go as far to say punish him like in a sense that he loses privileges, but the constant nagging I think is finally getting to him. He's been on a behavior "stoplight" since day 3 of school. She says he shuts down now and doesn't answer her. If you ask me he's simply sick of dealing with her.

He asks us all the time when will it be summer. A kindergarten kid shouldn't hate school. My heart breaks for him and I simply don't know what to do to make it better.

Yeah that sucks. I know some teachers in the younger grades can be tougher on boys, especially if they’re more active. But some kids that age just need a little more leeway.

I also think you can get into the bad first impression phase and the teacher can think that if I don't stay on him he's going to go back to being a wild child (which would be especially bad since it's kindergarten and realistically first impressions are the week after a long summer break, but in this case its sort of like a 5 year long summer break).

@mac5155 my 2nd grader had similar issues with his teacher. For some reason it seemed like she was picking on him alone and he was getting in trouble for things other kids were doing also. Or other kids were being rewarded for good behavior while my son was not even though he was also going what the good kids were doing. His behavior marks in the report card also reflected this. She would even nitpick little things in his homework which for a 2nd grader were over the top.

When we had our 1:1 with her earlier in the year, we brought this up. Said our son does not act this way at home, and showed her his report cards from previous years where she was basically telling us he was regressing.

Since then things have been much better. Better grades, my son doesn’t hate school anymore, I think he’s even had more friends (didn’t mention that he wasn’t invited to any birthday parties until a month ago, even though there were several including his best friend across the street).

Every time somebody asks us which teacher he has, the responses are “oh she was our favorite teacher” or “ she’s the best”. We just roll our eyes. I think her way of teaching is good for 95% of kids, but if you don’t fall into her plan right away, you’re labeled a troublemaker.

That was sort of what I hoped would happen. She said she was starting him on a behavior chart. I obliged and said I'd work on his behavior. But every day there are little things that he does that she seems to hold against him. And like the behavior chart I thought was a temporary thing. It's been every day. I feel like it's breaking his spirit

At this point I'd definitely drop the teacher a note. There's still time to end on a good note but you hate getting him turned off of school the first year. It'll also make his first grade teacher's work that much harder when he gets to spend all summer with nothing but bad memories.

We've been in constant contact with her... My wife actually sent her something yesterday though for a change. Basically said she's gotta stop being so hard on him.

So my daughter came home sick today around noon because of a bad stomach ache. Fast forward a few hours and I come downstairs to put away my coffee mug, and I see a finished bowl of spicy ramen on the counter. Dafuq is you doing, mini NTP?

Well, I suppose if you've got a bug in the ol' digestive tract, spicy food would blow it out even faster.

My daughter hasn't felt well all week, and has been complaining about a sore throat for a few days. Made a doctor's appointment for this morning since it doesn't appear to be getting better, then we get a message from our teacher stating that she's going to go "live" on ClassDojo today for all of the kids out sick with strep throat right now. So I guess I know what to expect now, lol.

Ah, making them go to school even when sick. It really is training for the workforce.
