Our daughter's school has it set up so that you can put money into her account online. Well, we are putting the hammer down on this.

Yesterday (and to her credit she admitted it immediately), she spent a total of EIGHT FCKING DOLLARS on her lunch. She went back for a second helping of chicken fingers, got two ice cream bars, a chocolate milk, and several other things. Needless to say, we had a very stern talk about how buying lunch at school is a privilege and that was a very unhealthy choice.

I went in to change the card associated with my daughter's account at school, and decided to look at the meal history.

Ms. NTP66 likes ice cream...

The system our school uses allows you to pay by cc, bank card, etc. But they charge a $5 flat fee plus a percentage fee on top of it. Yeah, no. One of the 2-3 things where we still have to write a good old fashioned check.

Man, the number of pictures that I've seen on Facebook of the sheer volume of christmas presents for kids (some of which are as young as my little one: just under 2). It's crazy to me. I don't understand where some of these people find room for this stuff. I feel like our house is already packed to the brim with stuff. Oh well... different strokes for different folks.

Also... found out a friend I graduated high school with (we were in all the same classes and played sports together, so naturally we spent a lot of time together, but didn't hang out much beyond that) had a little one (about 1.5 years old) die earlier this month... He had Krabbe's disease, which I had never heard of before this event. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krabbe_disease

I couldn't imagine. Just terrible.

Wish I never clicked that wiki page. Absolutely horrible.

To counterbalance that, friends of ours delivered their son 2 days before Christmas, knowing he had transposed arteries in his heart. They knew this well in advance, so had time to prepare. But it was still very difficult not knowing whether he'd be breathing or not when born and whether he needed surgery right away or could wait it out a bit. He had his surgery yesterday to switch the arteries so it all worked out.

So devastating to have to deal with things like this at such a young age.

I don't understand where some of these people find room for this stuff. I feel like our house is already packed to the brim with stuff. Oh well... different strokes for different folks.

We got our kid 1 thing (a toddler tower - not really even a toy) and some penguin tickets.

Then we basically emptied his playroom and filled it back up with all the gifts from grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

I certainly don't mind it because we didn't have to spend anything, but it's insane too. I'd rather they give him $$ and I put it in his college fund (which one pap did) or just take him on an experience.

So we're almost to the hitting phase. What do you do to stop this?

Also our dogs are terrible beggars and he has started throwing his food on the floor and watching them eat it. It's to the point where I have to separate the dogs from him when he's eating, and he's starting to do it in restaurants and stuff too.

We bought our kid about 8 presents that included toys, books, and a tricycle. He still ended up with a hundred damn toys from relatives.

Whats even worse is kids gift exchanges with friends. He got like 4-5 toys for under 15 bucks. It's all junk that we'll throw away in a few months or it will break.

I freely admit we might go a little overboard with Christmas, but our kids get almost no gifts throughout the year. Also, Santa only brings one big gift. We make it very clear that mrs meow and I bought the rest with money and some fat magic dude didn't pull them out of his butt.

Yeah.... My wife's family is like this. Super generous but FFS it took five hours to open Christmas presents.

We’d always make our kids gather a bag full of toys they didn’t play with anymore and donate the toys to a charity. Taught the kids about thinking about others and it cleared space.

And young kids don’t remember **** anyway, so we never bought a bunch of crap. And it’s always a bunch of crap most of which will fall by the wayside in about a month.
