Giles always seemed like a ****** bag, and of course it was later confirmed that he was an abusive dadhole, but damn if he wasn't the only thing worth watching on some truly awful Pirates teams.

good for cutch and probably a good move for the yanks I guess

but why does it always seem like every move by an ex pirate is some sort of insult to pirate fans? or is that just a natural reaction for a self loathing yinzer such as myself

Is Joe Mauer a HOFer? His contract expires at the end of this season, and there's been no announcement about retiring or coming back, whether with Twins or otherwise. Assume he plays 1-2 more years, finishes with around 2400 hits. Here's a starting point:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_C.shtml

He's unlikely to surpass Berra or Piazza in WAR or JAWS. He hasn't caught a game since 2013, and in 2011-2013 he never caught more than 75 games in those years. He'll end up having played around 50-55% of his games at catcher depending on how many more years he plays. Other than Buck Ewing, who played half his games at C and last played in 1897, no other HOF C has played less than 75% of their games at the position, and most are 90% or more at C.

I say... yes, but probably in years 12-15 of his HOF consideration.

Time for the resident Twins fan to chime in. I think he will be very hard-pressed to get into the HOF. He had the stretch from 2006-10 where he won 3 batting titles, won an MVP, and helped the Twins make the playoffs in 3 of those years. Those years certainly put him on the fast track to Cooperstown. But when you look at his full body of work, I don't think he can be elected on that 5-year stretch. Since the last year in the Metrodome in 2009 when he hit 28 HR, he hasn't hit more than 11 in any season since. He's never led the Twins to any postseason success as they've lost 13 straight playoff games (10 with Mauer on the roster) :o  And since 2010, the most news about Mauer is the albatross of his contract and his injuries and his perceived lack of vocal leadership. From a national standpoint, I don't know how he'd ever get the 75% necessary for induction.

What are Paul Molitor's games played at position %s? Where would one find that info?

Check out the Standard Fielding section and then do some math.

Mauer passes the “did teams specifically game plan around this guy” and the “was he the best at his position” test. But if you are going to be meh for a very long time, you need to make up for the meh by being super awesome.

Paul Molitor was inducted as a 3B. He played 791 at 3B out of 1495, or 52.9%.

I'm not sure I buy the games played at X position argument for Mauer, but would be willing to accept Molitor as an exception to the rule. Though Molitor is a much superior hitter.

Mauer’s value was that he was a good to great hitting catcher. If you compare his numbers to other first basemen, he has no chance at the Hall.
