The owners proposed a salary cap/floor before the last deal. Players rejected the premise outright.

Only major sport without that structure and then complains about the obvious outcome from that arrangement.

I have no sympathy for the players on this one.
Not surprising, but still disappointing.

MLB is facing a financial reckoning with the slow death of cable and these idiots are worried about Blake snell’s “bad” contract

I’m generally pro-salary cap but that said, it seems like payroll and wins/winning the World Series don’t really correlate so it’s not really that large of a concern imo

also, Snell is an interesting player just because he represents what starting pitching is these days. He won the Cy Young going 14-9. It annoys me when old farts harp on Win-Loss record because it doesn’t tell the whole story but 14 wins is depressingly few. PTI did a story last week that there may never be another 200 win pitcher, let alone 300 win

Not sure a salary cap/floor would have solved their issues either. A salary cap/floor system is typically tied to a % of revenue, and if cable revenues start going down, so will salary caps.

This isn’t to say I’m not in favor of a salary cap, it’s just that the takeaway I got from the article is that the players are completely disillusioned about how a business works.

That's why owners have already been stockpiling cash for two seasons. I told yinz this already.

His lack of wins is more telling because he doesn’t pitch deep into games. He goes 6 innings and is done, so that lack of going deep into games leads to less wins rather than lack of run support hindering wins.

the interpreter is taking the fall but I wonder if Ohtani truly is as innocent as the story claims

Ohtani has been here how long and still needs an interpreter?

Guess I have just been watching hockey for a long time, with many players from many places with various languages and no interpreters I’m aware of.

Guess I have just been watching hockey for a long time, with many players from many places with various languages and no interpreters I’m aware of.

Most players also have at least one other guy on their team from their home country who can translate in a pinch, as well as the major junior leagues being located in North America (so most of them pick up a passable version of English before hitting the leagues).

There's only 11 active Japanese MLB players. Of those 11, there are only 4 teams that have more than one (all have 2):

Darvish and Yuki Mastui (Padres)
Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Dodgers)
Seiya Suzuki and Shota Imanaga (Cubs)
Shintaro Fujinami and Kodai Senga (Mets)

Yu Darvish is the only player on the list who has been in the US for more than 6 years (Ohtani's career), and the Padres also benefit from having Hideo Nomo as a special advisor to help with translations.

I guess my point is that it makes sense from a perspective of not many Japanese players having other Japanese players who have been here to lean on like Jiri Hrdina (for Jagr) or Sergei Gonchar (for Malkin).

It's also convenient to have an interpreter so you can be selective about your media interactions and also have the option of claiming that the interpreter communicated something incorrectly if there is ever criticism. Why go through the effort of not having one if you can? He's still getting endorsements, he just gets to do even less in the spots.

Suddenly seem to be a lot of gambling scandals coming out in professional sports these days. Can't imagine why.

I think it was a huge mistake for pro sports to embrace gambling.

People destroy their financial, etc lives losing.

Gimme the odds on Ohtani being a degenerate gambler and his buddy is taking the fall.

Yeah but what were the odds that Jordan was a degenerate gambler back in 96
