While the pitching in extra innings was really good, it was pretty embarrassing the approaches to the plate by the batters and the strategy employed by the managers to try to get the win. Yes, I understand that players like Puig and Betts aren't going to lay down sacrifice bunts because they're star players but you gotta do what it takes to win and if that means moving over a runner to set up the next batter, so be it. Of course, just because someone could get to 2nd doesn't mean the next guy would be able to drive him in. It seemed once we got to about the 13th or 14th, everyone was swinging for the fences. I know the game now is all about launch angle and going the other way thru the 5 1/2 hole is taboo but if Muncy's ball hadn't left the yard, they might still be playing.

I'd imagine we'll see Sale tonight. The Sox don't seem to have that worry about lots of days of rest for their starters since Price came out of the pen pretty early in Game 3.
Mr. BC and I were remarking to each other the very same thing about the batting approach. It was stupid.

A lot of players don’t practice that hitting (bunting, moving the runner over, hitting the other way), so asking them to alter their approach in a different situation isn’t likely to produce results. They aren’t well-rounded hitters, and it’s a detriment to the game, imo.

Steve f'n Pearce is the big hero of game 4. Solo HR in 8th, 3-RBI double in the 9th. Holt involved in the scoring, too.

Bleh. Was hoping that the Dodgers would make it a good series and go into game 5 tied up.

OUTLANDISH HOT TAKE ALERT:

Dave Roberts should be fired...tonight and not allowed to manage tomorrow's Game 5. He has proven that he does not know how to manage a pitching staff. Rich Hill throws 6 innings of 1-hit ball and only 83-84 pitches and when he goes to the on-deck circle in the bottom of the 6th in a 4-0 game, Roberts decides to pull him back for a pinch hitter. The 8th place hitter gets the 3rd out so Hill ends up staying in the game. There never should have been a question that Hill was going back out there, especially in a 4-0 game. Hill walks the first guy and then strikes out the next. He's at 90 pitches. Roberts pulls him...FOR ANOTHER LEFTY!! Alexander then gives up a 4-pitch walk. Out he comes for...2-run Ryan Madson. Madson promptly gives up a 3-run HR and it's 4-3. Fast forward to the 8th. In Game 3, Roberts foolishly brings in Jansen for a 6-out save and he can only get 2 of those outs before the game is tied. Game 4, let's send out Jansen again for a 6-out save. Only took one out this time before the game was tied. And then the 9th was an utter disaster and the Sox are up 3-1. All because Roberts panicked and took a dominating Rich Hill out of the game. He should be dropkicked out along with the computers that were telling him to make those moves. Analytics suck.

Brock Holt is the 1st postgame interview.

"It's so much fun playing on this team..."

Steve Pearce is the 2nd postgame interview.

"It's just a great team..."

I shouldn't be annoyed, but I am. Sue me.

Yeah, wasn't sure if you posted that before or after he got lit up on his 6th pitch.

Pirates got a mention on the WS broadcast because of it.

Honus Wagner mention. Big night for Pirates fans.

He was mentioned for going 0-11 in the 1903 series.

To me, MLB is hard to get into. A real snooze fest. And this so called championship was a real sleep aid for me. Lots of nodding off.

Cue @Blue Canary with the fawning over Pearce winning the MVP.

I know I went off on Roberts's many foibles but in the end, the Red Sox were just better in all phases of the game. And to have a guy like Pearce get peeled off the scrap heap at the trade deadline and do what he did with this group says a lot for the work everyone in the organization has done. They were the best team this season and rightfully won the championship.

Was a nice cherry on top to have Machado literally go down swinging as the last out, to cap off his 0'fer night.

Am I missing something with the narrative being about these scrappy Red Sox coming together to win it all? Don't they have the highest payroll in the league by almost $25 million?

S. Pearce ops as a priate: 668 in 500+ plate appearances

ops everywhere else: 819
The tale of the tape!

In the blue corner: David Freese. The 35 year old corner infielder made his MLB debut in 2009 at the age of 26 with the St. Louis Cardinals. An All Star in 2012, he was the 2011 World Series MVP after setting an MLB record with 21 postseason RBI. Freese signed with your Battlin Buccos in 2016 and put up a 270/355/403/758 slash line and 32 HRs in 1,104 ABs wearing the black and gold. In his career he's batted 275/349/415/764 with 102 HRs. To date, Freese has earned $29.85MM in his professional career.

In the red corner: Steve Pearce. The also 35 year old infielder made his MLB debut in 2007 at the age of 24 with your beloved Pirates. He has never been an All Star and quite frankly anyone who watched him with the Pirates should be stunned that he is still getting paid to play baseball. He hit a Pirates appropriate 232/302/366/668 with 9 HRs in 465 ABs across 5 stupendous seasons with the Pirates. In 2012, with his career on the fritz after being released by the Pirates, Twins, and Yankees in a 6 month span, Pearce decided he no longer wanted to be bad at baseball. His career resurgence began with Baltimore and has carried him to Toronto, Tampa, New York, Houston, and finally Boston. As a non-Pirate he's hit an employable 263/345/469/815 with 81 HRs over 1,702 ABs, boosting his career splits to 257/336/447/783 with 90 HRs. To date, Pearce has somehow made $23.19MM in his professional career.

Consider me in the red corner.
Welp they both have World Series MVP trophies, so S. Pearce officially earns the title of “better baseball player than David freese”

Yeah, and it scares me how kids have little or no interest in watching MLB baseball.

During last year's World Series, we were at a baseball tournament for my younger sons' 9U team. These are kids that play baseball nearly year round, but only two out of 11 players could name the two teams playing for the championship. My kids peace out of watching any MLB games after an inning or so (although live is different). Granted if the stupid Braves were playing, I bet more would have known about it, but probably not even all of the kids (the Barves are our "local" MLB team).

At this rate, who will be watching MLB in 20 years? Most of my fondest memories of watching/listening baseball was when I was a kid, watching the Red Sox with my grandmother (who is smiling down from heaven this morning) and taking my first licensed, legal drive to Three Rivers Stadium to watch the Pirates in 1990.

I really prefer college baseball, as most games are right around two hours - especially for the D2 college I work for. They usually play a doubleheader in 4 1/2 hours, which is pretty sweet...then back on the bus to get back for classes.

I like listening and watching baseball.

but the world series is a tough to watch. I caught the 8th and 9th inning of the 18 inning game on Friday and it took like 45 minutes to play two innings. everyone just moves so slowly. I get why they move slowly....but damn does it drag on.

My son stayed up with me and was really into the games, but this was the first year he played baseball for real so we will see if it lasts.

He hates both the Red Sox and the Pirates because they were teams in his coach pitch league.
