Cards announced that Stanton wouldn't waive his NTC to go to St Louis. Yikes.

I guess the Yankees are still in the running?

I don’t think the Yankees are really in it. Contract is too big and too long, and they want to be under the luxury tax.

I was told it’s a big pissing match between Stanton and the Marlins. They continue to threaten a nightmare scenario of him with a bunch of league minimum guys filling the other 24 spots on the roster as they try to get their payroll below $80mm. Stanton remains adamant that he’ll only waive his NTC for the Dodgers.

What’s your connection with the Marlins?

Isn’t it pretty much a foregone conclusion that they’re dumping everything they can and starting over?

Friendship within the accounting department. And yes, they’re trying to rebuild and cut player costs, but priority number one is getting rid of Stanton.

That’s cool.
If you’re trying to rebuild and cut costs, priority 1A has to be Stanton. It was a bad contract when it happened, but they were hoping to get some more wins out of it I guess.

Marlins in general are a mess. Early in the week my buddy described it as "going as well as you'd expect from someone without a college degree and literally no experience with running a business or managing player personnel".

And that was before the news broke that they fired a cancer ridden scout, awaiting a kidney transplant and recovering from colon surgery, two weeks before his contract was up. In typical Jeter fashion to date, neither Jeter nor the team president called with the news. They left that up to their pro scouting director.

Dude is a piece of **** and so far is managing to make a bad franchise worse.
That's an interesting description of Jeter. The news about the scout certainly reflects poorly on him, no doubt. Managing to make a bad franchise worse? What has he done to do that? They need to completely rebuild in pretty much every way, which would mean doing things that aren't necessarily popular (talking about Conine, not the scout).
I remembered seeing this but forgot to comment. I was told Jeter’s ownership peaked when Hannah Davis came into the office to visit everyone. Jeter has been more distant from team employees than Loria was. Everyone has been living in fear of losing their jobs, which is only made worse by the publicized treatment of those who have been let go. The fan base, as small as it is, has no desire to see Stanton traded, nor do the players, even though most of them won’t be hanging around anyways. Most new ownerships come in as saviors. Jeter has come in as a destroyer.

If I bought a team, and it had to be gutted (which I think most would agree the Marlins do; they were often described as the worst franchise in the league before the sale), id be distant as well, until I knew where I was going with things. No ones going to be happy with a reboot, but if the alternative is keeping the albatross that is Stanton’s contract and no hope to have help come, a reboot would seem best.

Apparently Yankees are involved. Not happy about this, unless it involves little in terms of prospects and they can still get under the tax.

Why would a team give up anything to a franchise, so desperate to dump that contract?

Stanton has okayed a trade to the Yankees. Heyman reporting a deal has been agreed to. Brett Gardner the other way is one possibility. Yankees trying to move other contracts around to stay under the luxury tax threshold. Marlins are likely to try to deal any contracts they take in return.

No word if Jeter will self destruct like a Mission Impossible mission recording after fulfilling his role as spy for the Evil Empire.

Ellsbury needs to be a part of the deal, in my mind anyway.

Dickie, do you think they should keep Stanton?

No. Never should have signed him to the deal in the first place, though it did provide the auxiliary benefit of moving in their outfield walls. Trading him before signing him to an extension would have netted a better return with no NTC nuisances.

Can't imagine being a fan of a baseball franchise that has pockets like that. Any time I usually hear 'in the mix', the best case scenario is a 2nd or 3rd in the rotation kind of guy. Oh well.

I assume Stanton will play a lot of DH, with Gardner if left, Hicks center, Judge right. But could also shift Judge to left some and let them all DH some. Hopefully they can get rid of Ellsbury.

The Pirates love their Yankees trades, so they'll probably take Ellsbury, if they can dump Cutch. :pop:

Yankees will take on $265 million of remaining contract and prospects aren’t that great. However, Marlins have a guy who used to work for yanks and is very familiar with system. Supposedly, the prospects were better in other deals, but money was less.

The MLB sucks if you don't have an owner with deep pockets willing to use it.

True of any sport. Well-run organizations will succeed. Money makes it easier to sustain. Money allows some teams to have a wider margin for error. Poorly run teams won’t succeed. Market size matters, but it’s not the most important factor.
