The tale of the tape!

In the blue corner: David Freese. The 35 year old corner infielder made his MLB debut in 2009 at the age of 26 with the St. Louis Cardinals. An All Star in 2012, he was the 2011 World Series MVP after setting an MLB record with 21 postseason RBI. Freese signed with your Battlin Buccos in 2016 and put up a 270/355/403/758 slash line and 32 HRs in 1,104 ABs wearing the black and gold. In his career he's batted 275/349/415/764 with 102 HRs. To date, Freese has earned $29.85MM in his professional career.

In the red corner: Steve Pearce. The also 35 year old infielder made his MLB debut in 2007 at the age of 24 with your beloved Pirates. He has never been an All Star and quite frankly anyone who watched him with the Pirates should be stunned that he is still getting paid to play baseball. He hit a Pirates appropriate 232/302/366/668 with 9 HRs in 465 ABs across 5 stupendous seasons with the Pirates. In 2012, with his career on the fritz after being released by the Pirates, Twins, and Yankees in a 6 month span, Pearce decided he no longer wanted to be bad at baseball. His career resurgence began with Baltimore and has carried him to Toronto, Tampa, New York, Houston, and finally Boston. As a non-Pirate he's hit an employable 263/345/469/815 with 81 HRs over 1,702 ABs, boosting his career splits to 257/336/447/783 with 90 HRs. To date, Pearce has somehow made $23.19MM in his professional career.

Consider me in the red corner.

With runners in scoring position and two outs this postseason, the Sox are an unprecedented 17-for-41 (.415) with three doubles, a triple, three homers and 31 RBIs. To put that in perspective, the next-highest team batting average for a postseason club with at least 30 at-bats in those situations belongs to the 1910 Philadelphia A's (.394).

Some in-laws were at last night's game. I'm glad Boston won again. I watched up until Boston took the lead, they pulled that 3 run 5th-inning out of their asses. I'm not really sure what the hell Roberts is doing with having Pederson, Muncy, Bellinger and Grandal all starting on the bench. And also, Freese batting 3rd? He's been great at poking singles the other way against Price and Sale, but put that dude at the bottom of the lineup to assist in rolling it over, not plopping him in the three hole.

I may go back and look before Game 3 tomorrow but I'd love to know how many different lineups that Roberts has started in these playoffs. He's got a guy in Dozier who has experience against the Red Sox and he keeps pulling him in favor of Kike Hernandez who is hitting at a level that most here at 5AF could exceed. Gone are the days when a manager would have a set lineup that you could recite from rote with the exception of a few day-to-day replacements. It's almost like Roberts is throwing spaghetti up against the wall but instead of sticking, it's falling onto the floor in one big clump.

Game 1, he has most of his best hitters on the bench to start because he's afraid of Sale and his lefthandedness. Take that damn analytics book and throw it out. I can see why Grandal isn't starting since he has problems catching colds behind the plate. But at this point when your offense has been largely absent since the NLDS, you've gotta get your best bats in the lineup and go with them.

just received a notification about a bleacher report article with regards to manny machado stealing signs. my first inclination was 'a player stealing signs while playing? nbd. must be something more serious' start reading and its about a player stealing signs while playing. and its a humongous article. i dont get the hullabaloo

If Machado's tipping locations from 2nd base then that's all fair game. If someone can decode the signals from the 3rd base coach, that's fair game too. Doing it electronically is dirty pool, though. If you're the team getting your signs stolen, you might want to change things up a bit.

Smart kid. I had a summer-league coach in HS who was a real country bumpkin and every time we one-handed it, he'd bellow out, 'TWO HANDS, TURKEY!!'. I still say it to this day whenever someone Hollywoods it.

After this marathon game tonite, I wonder how long it'll take for the non-traditionalists to start squawking about starting an extra inning with a runner on 2nd.

Despite being a Sox fan I'm okay with them being out of relief pictures in 12 innings. Maybe stop sending a reliever out there every other batter, k.

Excellent work by Eovaldi; shame he gets the L.

What a finish. Good on LA to gut it out. Muncy goes opposite field, too.

I tapped out after the Sox scored in the 12th (?). Can't believe it went 18.

While the pitching in extra innings was really good, it was pretty embarrassing the approaches to the plate by the batters and the strategy employed by the managers to try to get the win. Yes, I understand that players like Puig and Betts aren't going to lay down sacrifice bunts because they're star players but you gotta do what it takes to win and if that means moving over a runner to set up the next batter, so be it. Of course, just because someone could get to 2nd doesn't mean the next guy would be able to drive him in. It seemed once we got to about the 13th or 14th, everyone was swinging for the fences. I know the game now is all about launch angle and going the other way thru the 5 1/2 hole is taboo but if Muncy's ball hadn't left the yard, they might still be playing.

I'd imagine we'll see Sale tonight. The Sox don't seem to have that worry about lots of days of rest for their starters since Price came out of the pen pretty early in Game 3.

It was pretty dumb for the Red Sox to take out their SP when they did last night.

I saw a tweet that last night's game duration was within 15 minutes of the entire 1939 series... Need to check that for accuracy, but yikes...

The pace of play was intolerable in the 9th inning, which is when i stopped watching. I love dramatic playoff baseball but the pace of play is beyond watchable
