Fun things in KC. A month into the teams worst ever season the owner is going to ask the city for $500m.

The owner plans to put funding for a downtown ballpark on the August ballot, to the tune of half a billions dollars. The Chiefs will follow that up soon after as they have an unwritten agreement with the city that both organizations get an equal handout. Of course, the problem is John Sherman bought the Royals in 2019. He brought in Mike Matheny in 2020 and the team had an ok'ish 2021 and a poor 22. So he canned him and the GM who was the architect of the World Series runs and are now on pace to be the fourth team to lose 120+ games in MLB's history.
One of my favorite aspects of European soccer is the lack of corporate welfare for stadiums. Most stadiums are older than God and full of charm and probably kind of suck. Modifications and improvements are funded by the clubs that can afford them. New stadiums are funded and owned by their clubs. Tottenham spent £1 billion on their stadium and it was funded by existing resources and loans.

The Royals are owned by a billionaire who paid over a billion dollars for the team. Fund your own **** stadium you ****.

this seems to be in the news a lot. A’s moved because the city didn’t want to pay for a new stadium. Bills threatened to move until NY state funded a new stadium. Titans just got a ton of money from Tennessee

it’s shitty that owners are so greedy and know they can take advantage of communities like that. I think there are studies that show that the public money spent on stadiums is never made back so it’s billionaires getting away with holding communities ransom

One of my favorite things about begging the public to pay for these stadiums is how they supposedly benefit the area by being able to host other events like concerts. The problem with that is how many stadium tours are there these days? Taylor Swift and a few country singers are the only ones who can consistently fill stadiums. The old rock bands can't do it or don't tour any longer. (Remember Monsters of Rock tours?) It's another grift, ie how wealthy people stay wealthy.

I wish commissioners had the balls to put a clause into owning teams that stadiums could not be publicly funded. If you want to be part of our players club, you play by the rules and buy your own mansion.

I can’t be arsed to watch many games this early in the season but let’s take a look at some stats:

Ohtani - …hitting .294 (highest average of his career) and pitching 1.85 (lowest ERA of his career). this dude is ridic

Judge - lowest slugging of his career (outside of his first season) and Yanks are in last in the east. Ha, suck it you weiners

The commissioners are employed by the owners so as soon as someone did that, they'd be fired and replaced by someone who would immediately rescind that rule. The only way to prevent public funding of stadiums, would be a federal law that prevented any community in the country from providing funding. That way the only leverage a team would have would be to move out of the country. Even if in the slim chance they could get Congressional support for such a law, I doubt it would be constitutional.

Yeah I get that, but doesn't the commissioner also have vetoing power over whether a team is able to move or not? Doesn't he basically write the rules when it comes to teams moving? I'm sure other owners could just fire him like you said, so it would have to come with compromises.

And I can't envision this becoming law for many reasons, much of which has to do with the 4 major sports being exempt from anti-trust laws

There's no easy way out of it. Cities are too eager to welcome in new revenue even if it costs the taxpayers with no tangible benefit other than having that team have your cities name in front of it.

That felt more like a total flub in his delivery than something malicious. I don't think it necessarily means he's a racist in his private life either.

The apology was appropriate.

my final at bat in high school baseball I faced a pitcher who could pitch 90+ (he eventually went pro and played for the Rays). I was asked to sac bunt and I…popped out. The top of the next inning the 2, 3 and 4 batters all struck out

I’m amazed that pro batters can even follow pitches that fast, let alone make swing/no swing decisions. You have to be able to process information at such a fast rate

Ha yeah I faced a lefty that threw 92 and got drafted by the Buccos and went to Louisville, and.. like, you could just barely even see it. We faced upper 80s and actually did pretty well, but those extra 5-7mph are just another level. Then add movement like that and it seems like it shouldn't even be humanly possible to hit

I still follow Travis Sawchik, the old Pirates beat writer (who actually covered Clemson sports way back when) who now works for The Score as their lead MLB reporter. He's been posting a lot about the Cardinals, who signed Willson Contreras to an $88 million deal in the offseason to be their catcher, replacing Molina. Contreras showed up early to learn the pitching staff, and I think opted out of the WBC to better learn the team. Now the Cards have him DHing and playing LF on occasion. A rare Cards L. Hate to see it.

Seeing the Cardinals at the bottom of the NL Central is almost as good as seeing the Pirates at the top. Somehow I feel like come August their positions will be flipped.

Ohtani a double short of a cycle tonight. He was the starting pitcher - that would have been cool
