I hate baseball. The rich keep getting richer.
Sadly, yup.
Is that evidenced by the Stanton situation? That was a "small market" team signing someone to an awful contract and then having to deal with it.
I don't care what the Marlins do. It's more about where he will end up. This, plus the Ohtani situation (in which he will end up on a team with big pockets) make baseball very difficult to follow anymore.
Is SF considered a big market, because that seems a likely landing spot for Stanton.

Ohtani can basically choose his team, and the difference in money teams can offer him isn’t very consequential.

Red Sox, Yankees, Pirates, Twins, Blue Jays, Mets, Athletics, Brewers, and DBacks have all been outed as out of the running for Ohtani. Plus he already shat on the Phillies the other day. Giants, Mariners, and Dodgers seem to be the front runners, with Cubs, Angels, Rangers, and Padres not yet receiving a publicized response.

I do love the fact that folks are slamming NH for him not signing in Pittsburgh.

He'd be a better hitter than most of their lineup. :pop:

Mariners make a lot of sense. Small market team on the rise, good Japanese/Asian community, plus Ichiro did well there (and should still be a Mariner imo).

Here's a pretty solid scouting reporting summary on Otani from MLBTR:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/05/ ... otani.html

I'm really intrigued to see if his chosen team has the nuts to let this guy DH in-between starts. Every one of those scouts sees him as a 255ish hitter with 25+ homeruns and the potential for even more power while providing plus speed on the base path. I don't see how you keep that guy out of your lineup, even if he is your future ace.

I guess AL makes more sense with his limited position play - a little RF, but not enough to scout properly.

This was a really great read...thank you.

I'm surprised. Surprised financially as well. Angels just signed former Braves prospects Kevin Maitan and Livan Soto for $2.2MM and $850K respectively. The Angels had a total of $2.315MM in bonus pool money so they must be using next year's money for the two prospects.

I'm sure playing with Trout had a decent amount to do with this. West Coast, AL team, play with Trout, team should be decent... all kind of makes sense. Plus they'll have more resources to sign him long term than a team like Seattle.

He'll be making the league minimum.

But be able to sign an extension. So if he's looking to stay with a team long-term, I'd think he'd want to start somewhere that has more to offer long-term.

Seems like he was focused on a place where he could maintain a rather low key profile. Going to the Angels, a pretty irrelevant franchise that already has their face of the franchise kind of makes sense.

Anyone have a tl;dnr why he got to sign wherever he wanted rather than going through the draft? Age?

International players aren't part of the draft.

Only North American players (and Puerto Rican?) go through a draft currently.

Not sure why there isn't an international draft along with the regular draft. Something the next CBA should probably address.

I thought this was interesting as well. More playing time a 1B for Pujols seems less than ideal.
