Stanton homers in his first at-bat.

Should probably just cancel the season and anoint the Yankees champions.

F the Twins. How can you get pissed the guy played the odds against the shift. Baseball unwritten rules are weird.

lol playing the shift up 7 runs. Get real, they have no reason to complain. Unwritten rules in baseball are garbage most of the time.

If there's an unwritten rule to not bunt down 7, there has to be a corollary to not play a massive shift up 7.

What's the 'utility' of the 'rule'? To end a blown out game as fast as possible?

I think they're being silly but I'm having a hard time seeing where they're coming from.

I LITERALLY came to this thread to ask the question:

"What does it mean: (a) 'the shift' and (b) to bunt against it"?

(I do understand 'to bunt')

Power hitters like that tend to have only one swing, and it usually only goes to one side of the field. So the defensive team shifts all their players to the anticipated side of the field so the chances of them catching it are improved. Some of the shifts are getting so drastic they won't have anyone on the unanticipated side of the field at all.

The hitter can swallow some pride and lay down a bunt to that side of the field (against the shift) and then jog to first because there is nobody there to catch it and throw to the first baseman.

The Twins are doing their best Braves/Cards impression, basically.

Thanks! Learning something every day.

Until now, I thought the stupidest "unwritten rule" in sports was "don't attack the race leader when he gets a flat tire" in cycling. I no longer think that. :)

Giancarlo Stanton's Big Apple debut went dramatically different than he and Yankees fans had hoped, as his five-strikeout performance drew boos late in the Bronx Bombers' home-opening win.

"You put up a performance like that, you should get some boos," Stanton said at his locker to a horde of reporters following his 0-for-5 afternoon.

The boos came in the bottom of the eighth inning as Stanton walked back to the Yankees' dugout after swinging at a 77 mph slider from Tampa Bay Rays reliever Sergio Romo. It was the slugger's final strikeout of the game.

In today's Cutch tracker, through six games he has two hits in 24 AB, one of which was a two-bagger. On top of that, he's only walked once. Still early in the season, but I'm sure a lot of Giants fans are Paniking
