Yeah, the over-the-top celebrations with the stupid goggles are one of the worst things about baseball that has emerged in the last 20 years. It's like they decided to keep all of the stupid traditions (like unwritten rules) and add a bunch of stupid new ones.

We've talked about this before...the starving minor leaguers.

If you win your division/clinch the playoffs, your league, and of course the Series, you should pop bottles and go crazy. But winning the WC game or the LDS should not be reason to spray champagne all over the place. Do NHL and NBA teams douse each other after they win playoff series? Do NFL teams don the goggles when they advance in the playoffs?

I've been beaten up on this stance before. So I'll just reiterate: it's dumb.

Mariners lost to the lowly Angels last night. Not ideal.

It's gonna be Yankees-Sox on Tuesday night. Mariners had a golden opportunity last night and messed it up (led off 7th inning with triple, walk, 3 straight K's the last one looking). The Jays have the best opportunity since they have 2 with the Orioles left but I think the Sox win both their games vs the Nats to set up a wildcard game where I'll be rooting for structural failure.

MLB CHAOS SUNDAY:

If the Yankees & Red Sox lose and the Blue Jays & Mariners win, we'll have a 4-way tie for the 2 AL Wild Card spots. If Yanks/Sox go 1-1 and both the Jays & Mariners win, there will be a 3-way tie for the last WC spot. If Yanks/Sox go 1-1 and Jays/Mariners go 1-1, there will be a Game 163 for the last WC spot.

If the Giants lose and Dodgers win, there will be a Game 163 to decide the NL West champion. Oh by the way, both teams will have 106 wins in that scenario.

All games start at 3:00 eastern. I won't be watching much football during that time.

For the good of the game. I almost want to do a 5 game parlay that ends up there.

So, here's my summary of the tiebreaker scenarios.

1. 4 teams tie for 2 spots
-this would require both Boston and the Yankees to lose and both Seattle and Toronto to win
-team A hosts team B and team C hosts team D. Winners get the wildcards.
-the 4 teams draft their letter based on H2H results among the 4
-draft order: bos, tor, nyy, sea

2. 3 teams tie for 2 spots
-this would require both nyy and Boston to lose, and one of toronto/Seattle to win and the other to lose
-team A hosts team B. The winner gets one wild card. The loser hosts team C. That winner gets the other wildcard.
-the 3 teams draft their letter based on h2h
-possible draft orders: Bos nyy sea OR Bos tor nyy

3. 3 teams tie for 1 spot
-this would require one of boston/nyy to win and the other to lose, and BOTH Toronto and Seattle to win
-team A hosts team B. The winner hosts team C. That winner gets the wildcard
-same letter draft style
-possible draft orders: Tor nyy sea OR Bos sea tor

Umpire Joe West has officially informed Major League Baseball he will retire after the postseason.

West, 68, broke the record for most games umpired, held by Bill Klem, when he was behind the plate for No. 5,376 in May.

"Breaking the record was the goal," West told ESPN on Monday. "I thought I would do it last year but the season got a little messed up and I don't think it was right to work until the point of the record then just quit."

I remember when he was the "new" umpire in the mid-70's.
