I'm super stoked for the 30 for 30 on the McGwire/Sosa summer tonight
So what did you think? I remembered a good amount of that chase so it was more of a reminder about how the HRs played out over the course of the season, especially September and the race up to 62. From a TV standpoint, I have a few nitpicks about it (biggest one being them showing current-day Wrigley Field crowd reaction shots to 1998 action) but other than that small stuff, it was a nice trip down memory lane.

My fun (read: unfortunate) story from that season -- in May, my brother, a friend, and I got tickets for Cards-Phillies. The previous night, McGwire hit 3 dingers. So we're excited that he's on a hot streak and he's gonna hit one while we're there. As we're watching BP, I happen to look at the Jumbotron and see the posted Cardinals lineup. I had to squint and look twice because McGwire WASN'T IN THE LINEUP. We're like WTF. So it's a major downer as I'm not a fan of either of those two teams so it's just hang out at the ballpark, drink a few beers, and make derisive comments about the play going on. As we get to the late innings and the Cards bullpen is going to work, I kept hoping that LaRussa would pinch-hit Big Mac in the pitcher's spot. But since the Cards were leading late, they didn't need the pop so it was a full day off for McGwire. Insert :face: here.

I missed the whole thing past July because I entered boot camp in August.

Agree with most of this column. The owners rarely are at risk in baseball. It’s a pretty safe investment with big gains each year. They should take the temporary loss, like many businesses are doing now, and move on.

Wish Cuban was an owner in MLB. He would be ripping the other 29 owners to shreds.

I really liked it. The current day Wrigley shots with 1998 dates shown on them were cheesy but whatever. Much like the Last Dance, I was only 9 during this.. So I remember following it all summer, I really remember #62, that line shot down the line. But I didn't remember many specifics, so to me it was cool to kinda just re-live it. I did not know McGwire hit 5 in the last three games of the year to beat Sammy. I wish there was more Griffey - he was right in the thick of it until August or so IIRC

I do hope this turns into a push for a salary cap/floor. If there was ever going to be a time, the COVID thing would be the catalyst.

I just hate both sides. The owners have avoided a cap mainly because they are greedy and don't want to fully share the revenues, so when things are going well, they are making bank. Which means when things are going bad they should take a brunt of the losses as well and not try to push it onto others.

Meanwhile, the players have pushed against it because it makes a few players ultra rich, but honestly, and they have complained in the past when some free agents aren't getting the money they thought they would and blame the owners. If you want a free market system, if no one wants to sign you for what YOU think you are worth, then don't complain.

Like all the other sports, there is definitely gaps, etc, but if you have a cap/floor and revenue sharing, then typically you work as a team because the risk/reward is on both sides.

That said, the people propping up the NFL, I want to wait and see how things go in the fall if there is a second spike, because it has been a hell of a lot easier on them as it is the only sport that has not directly affected playing time and their season just yet.

IMO, last year proved that no one player is worth that kind of money. Bryce Harper gets WAAAAAYYYY overpaid. his new ream doesn't even make October and his old team wins it all.

I didn't realize he was already out of football. Out of the NFL by 2018, save for a few stops as a practice squad player.
In high school, in 25 2/3 innings, he struck out 33 batters, with 40 walks, five HBPs and a 7.36 ERA, according to Max Preps. He was better as a hitter, with 10 home runs and a .378 average in 148 at-bats.

so good enough to be a #5 on the Buccos?

Pittsburgh sports media employs the dumbest people. Do you have to fail an IQ test to get a job in this town?
